For just mounting the diamond?
$25 - $150 or so depending on where you are.

The setting itself could be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand depending on what it is.

Im answering both ways because its late and Im not sure which answer you were looking for.

Are you asking how much to have the diamond set, or how much the setting should cost? The answer to the first question depends on the competency of the person setting the stone and whether you are having the diamond set by a retail store with retail overhead or having the diamond set by a trade-shop. We charge $45.00 to $55.00 to set a diamond of this weight category if it's not a diamond that we sold and the mounting job is top notch... We're not looking to do trade work here Leon, so this isn't a solicitation, just an answer... The seat for the stone is cut using burrs which are the same crown and pavilion angle as the stone being set which results in a tight fit... The prongs are polished before the stone is set which removes any metal shavings from around the prongs... The stone is carefully set and the prongs are well rounded to prevent snagging... Setting a stone like this takes time and time costs money, but it is well worth the attention to detail. We've seen retail stores charge as much as $395.00 to set a diamond this way in a platinum solitaire, we almost fainted, but we've seen the bill...

As far as the cost of settings goes, that depends on the content of the platinum ring, the weight and how the ring was manufactured. Platinum is measured in parts per thousand, 900 platinum is 900 parts platinum and 100 parts irridium or cobalt in most cases... 950 platinum is 950 parts platinum and 50 parts another alloy. We've seen mall stores selling 500 platinum which might as well be white gold for what it's worth... So be sure that you're getting 900 or 950 platinum when you are comparing prices... Weight matters because platinum is sold by weight, we know where to buy platinum solitaires that are so feather light that we could afford to give them away with each diamond purchase but we wouldn't set a diamond in one even temporarily because the settings are so light that the prongs might move if we breathed on them to hard, we're exaggerating a bit to make a point, but you get the idea, right? With platinum prices being what they are right now, we expect that you'll pay about $475.00 for a basic solitaire style ring for a 1.68 carat round center stone, more for a knife edge because the knife edge solitaires are hand rolled where most of the traditional solitaires are die struck.

Is there going to be a cost savings with buying platinum wedding bands online that would make it even worth it?

B/c of the reasonably little information you need to know for plat vs that of diamonds, I would think that the prices differences would tend to be pretty flat.

Most jewelers have pretty easy access to this type of mounting from several different manufacturers. The price will vary slightly depending on the weight, brand and such. There are quite a few variables to get it work right but none are all that difficult. It should not be difficult to find a local platinumsmith that can do this job for you and I recommend buying the mounting directly from them. It may cost an extra $50 to buy it there (or maybe not) but it will guarantee that the setting is the correct size and it removes the he said - she said kind of argument if there is any sort of an issue about the quality of the mounting vs. the quality of the setting.

By the way, size 4 1/2 is not a stock size for most manufacturers so you will probably need to get it sized as well.
