I am trying to decide b/t buying a platinum setting for a 1.4ct stone, my final choices are a Renaissaince Platinum EM301 setting from Philip Press or a similar custom platinum setting from BGD yet to be made. Both are about the same $$

How would you rate the two settings, especially with the BGD being sight unseen (CAD drawing for approval).

thanks!

can you post some pics?

Are you already having BGD create the CAD and design features of a custom setting? I am confused on what you are asking us to compare the EM3001 Renaissance setting with.

I think the Renaissance setting is very pretty, antique looking and has a great deal of delicate detail and engraving. I have not seen that style on the BGD website so I didn't think they designed antique style jewelry with heavy engraving. I'd like to see what BGD comes up with.

But the Renaissance setting looks gorgeous if that is the style you like. It doesn't need any improvement.

I think it''s mostly lovely! I''m very curious about the other.

Now this is just my personal preference, but I''m not that into the little heart at the base of where the stone sits. IMHO, it''s just ever so slightly cheesy... but maybe that''s just me :)

the Renaissance EM301 is a very pretty setting - I`m also not a big fan of hearts in settings, but besides that, it`s lovely. Have you asked BGD about a custom setting yet?

BGD will forward a CAD once I pay for it, but they know that I am looking for them to put their twist on the RP setting - so I am at their mercy in a sense.

RP will allow me to change out the heart to another symbol. Other RP rings have a }{ where the heart is located (inverted heart?)

If you like the setting- and can change out the hearts- I also don;t like those- then I would stick with it- why spend $ and take a chance on a custom design you may or may not like. GL

I like to see the ifnished product so would go with the original.

If someone already makes what you want and can do the customizations you want to a current model...I don''t see point in going full custom.

I am sure BGD would make a great ring - they are doing one for me (and they can do carving per their gallery) but they will not do an exact copy and it will be more in their own style too. And of course you do not get to see a final product until it is your own final product. That can be wonderful..but sounds like you feel better knowing exactly what it is going to look like in the end.

I think Phillip Press will customize. I liked a couple of his settings and spoke with him a couple years ago. Brian does lovely work, but he will make changes so it won''t be exactly like the Phillip Press ring.

If you really like the first ring, and are in LA I would go with the Renaissance ring, especially since they are the same price. Did you buy your stone from Brian?

I want to buy the setting and diamond from the same place, so if I buy a BGD they would make the setting.

Any opinions if I as for an European Shank on this ring?

You do not need to do this. You can buy the setting and have it made for the diamond you choose (send them exact measurements) and then have the setting send to BGD for setting. Or, with some designers, they will set the diamond for you. You can purchase insurance from Jewelers Mutual that will cover the stone against damage suring the setting process.

Yes. No need to buy the stone and setting from the same place. It can be too limiting.

To be fair to the dealers, they''re at your mercy too. They can invest time and money to be left hanging. If you can get what you want in the Renaisaince, do it.
