Greetings everyone,

I am in search of an engagement ring. So far I like the tension ring design the most and particularly this one http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/tension-setting/ring/item_356-1358.asp

I always wanted Platinum, but the price difference between the 18k and platinum is almost $3,000. Can be such a different in price?

Also, how are the Truehearts diamond compares to well known diamond like ACA?

Thank you very much in advance for any input.

Cheers.

It depends. They have both very nice stones, you are welcome if you want to compare them on the forum.

I am still looking, definitely will ask the experts here :)

Also, would the grade between VS to VVS worths the premium? I am leaning toward getting the best possible clarity since the tension design exposes the diamond almost at every angle.

Cheers

Bought a SI1 the other day. Came...can''t see a single flaw anywhere. Even with a regular old desk magnifying glass....

that makes no sense to $3000 is absurd. anyone else care to comment?

My ering is VS2 and I wouldn't have wanted my FI to waste his money getting a VVS. Unless someone has x-ray vision they won't see the difference. The difference between VS to SI1/2 is another matter imo. As for the $3000 prices difference for Platinum, that sounds very odd to me. In London, the difference in price between plat & W/G has actually gone DOWN due to the high price of Gold.

Thank you everyone for your input. Greatly appreciated.

I really like platinum since you only purchase the ring once in your life (hopefully), I wanted the best possible but I still don''t understand, hard to swallow such dramatic increase in price.

100,

Why don''t you give JA a call tomorrow and ask them about the price difference. It may just be a typo. Good luck in your search.

I don''t know the answer to your question, but I do know that if you look at 18kt vs platinum for the same piece at high end retails stores, the price for the platinum version is very often almost exactly twice as much as gold. You know, I''m not sure there''s a "reason" for it. It seems that it commands a high premium. Good luck with your decision.

Depending on how much gold or plat. is used I could see A price difference (just not $3,000), as 18k gold is usually 75% pure where as plat. is many times 95% pure. If you take current market values of gold and plat for today, adjust them for the purity found in jewelry, then 6 grams of gold comes out at (rounded) $160 while as 6 grams of plat. comes out at $255. Of course this is ONLY going off of stock prices and not taking into consideration any overhead costs, creating the ring, actual metal weight of ring, etc.

It's very odd to have a $3K difference because the price of gold is now very close to the price of platinum. My quote from Whiteflash for the 2 different types of metals only yielded a difference of a few (low) hundred.

As for the VS vs VVS, if your VS stone is eye clean from the side, there's no need to go overboard with VVS. In fact, many VS2 stones are eye clean from all angles up to 6 inches away from the eye.

I would not pay for VVS. I would find a VS2 that is eye clean from the side. It isn''t hard to find such stones, so why pay for more?
