Dear PS'ers,

Do you think that a 1.5mm shank in the following setting will be strong/secure enough, or should I go up to 2mm? I've read many excellent posts on the topic of shank thickness on this forum, but didn't come away with consensus.

Description:
  • Hand forged platinum setting for a 3.59 EC, with
    tapered baguettes (6mm x 2 mm x 1.5mm), and
extremely delicate micro pave on the basket (melee is <1mm),
on the outside of the double claw prongs, and
on the bars holding the baguettes in place (in the following renders, these bars appear more squarish than they will be on the finished product).

What finger size are we talking about here. For a larger stone like that I would go up to 2mm. Unless we are talking about a size 2-3 finger a shank with 1.5 is never a good idea especially hand forged.

It would also depend in the thickness of the shank, which can add strength to a narrower shank. I would rather play it safe with a 2 mm shank though since this is 24/7 ring with a fairly large stone.

I just had a smiliar ring made with similar sized center stone and tapered baguettes. I also have size 3.5 fingers... SK made my ring with a 2 mm shank. I cant speak to the durability of anything thinner, and I don't have any micropave at all in mine, but 2 mm looks VERY dainty as is. I don't think I'd feel comfortable with anything thinner, actually. With center stone and baguettes the ring will be a bit top heavy so I think 2mm is the best combination of delicate vs. durable. Hope this helps!

Btw please post pics! I think it's gonna look great with micropave :)

I would also go with 2 mm - durability aside .. I think it looks better a bit thicker.

I agree. I'd stick to 2mm. It will look nicer and it will take care of all the structural concerns.

Plus honestly, when you grip things... bands that are too thin kinda hurt. My 2mm shanks are the most comfortable of all my ring widths to wear. Plus I think it cuts down on spinning.

Definitely 2mm! 2mm IS thin!

My ering is in a platinum solitaire setting, 3.5 carat stone, the shank is 1.5mm wide and very thin at 0.5mm height. Its ridiculously comfortable. My ring size is 4.5 so its a small ring and I am comfortable with its durability. I might not be as comfortable at a bigger finger size. My ring is insured also.

Its an antique ring and a lot of antique bands were made this way. my ring is potentially 100 years old and still going strong. I don't know why everyone is suddenly so paranoid about shank width.

Mine is extremely comfortable at 1.5mm wide but its also very low profile. Yours looks significantly higher profile and that should count towards strength but detract from comfort being narrow and high. So go 2mm for comfort if you like.

Thank you all very much! I decided to go with the 2mm, for safety. I'll post pics of the new renders when I get them. Can't wait!

Thanks Hippi Pixi! I'm jealous of your skinny shank! I don't completely understand why a 2.0mm shank would be that much stronger, or that much more comfortable than a 1.5mm, but my jeweler is really pushing for it, so I guess I'll defer to her. Thank you very much for sharing your experience.

Thank you! I will DEFINITELY post pics when I get them. Unfortunately, the jeweler said it would take 4 weeks. I'm SO impatient. :)

Platinum is soft and bends easily.

Think about aluminum foil vs an aluminum soda can. I can crumple foil with little effort. Much harder with the can.

Thank you. I decided to go with the 2mm, and my finger size is 5.5. Fingers crossed! Thanks again!
