when choosing a diamond with inclusions (SI1 in my case), what should I be looking for in terms of the location of the inclusions? Common sense would be to avoid inclusions near the top of the diamond (table). Is this an amateurish way to think about it?
I don't know what ct weight you're looking at, but if the SI 1 inclusion is right in the middle of the table, it's likely to be slightly eye-visible (depending on the type of inclusion -feather, dark crystal, cloud... and from the lab that graded the stone.)
Generally, look for inclusions on the side or at least not right in the table. Also, it's a good idea to ask for a verbal description and, if possible some high resolution magnified pics.
Giangi is right. The type, color, and location of inclusions is the key to selecting an eye clean SI and sometimes an I rated clarity diamond. Keeping Cut as your top priority, you can find great value in SI diamonds.
Generally speaking, look for inclusions off to the side and toward the bottom of the diamond. White inclusions are less obvious than black carbon/colored gemstone flecks. An inclusion on the top in the girdle area can be hid by prongs or bezel in mounting. If the diamond has a feather, make sure the feather does not cause structural problems. A feather that runs parallel to the facets will be much less obvious than a feather that runs "across the grain" of the cut.
Check with the vendor. Get a good verbal description, plot, and pics if possible. Make sure the vendor has a good return policy as well if you are not pleased with your purchase. Good Luck in your hunt!
