Hong Kong-based jewelry retailer Chow Tai Fook just bought the type IIa "Pink Star" diamond for a record $71.2 million, making it the most expensive cut diamond ever sold. The 59.60-carat pink diamond is the largest in its class ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The internally flawless oval-mixed-cut rock measures 2.69 by 2.06 centimeters (1.06 by 0.81 inches) and weighs 11.92 grams (0.026 pounds).

The Pink Star was mined by De Beers in 1999 in South Africa, and weighed 132.5 carat in the rough. The Pink Star is the largest known diamond having been rated Vivid Pink. As a result of this exceptional rarity, the Steinmetz Group took a cautious 20 months to cut the Pink. It was unveiled in Monaco on 29 May 2003 in a public ceremony, and named the "Steinmetz Pink" at the time.

Sotheby’s was forced to buy back the diamond after a previous buyer defaulted on what was then a record sale in 2013 ($83.1 million, and renamed the "Pink Dream"). Until now, the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction was the "Oppenheimer Blue," which fetched 56.8 million Swiss francs (more than $57 million at the time) last May. The previous world auction record for a pink diamond was $46.2 million for the 24.78 carat "Graff Pink" in 2010.

wow, it is INCREDIBLE!!!:love::drool:

I really don't like the cut.

So how do I get to be the hand model for those pictures of it? I don't need to own the diamond, but please let me wear it for ten minutes. :P

I have to admit that a Type IIa IF pink diamond seems a strange beast indeed. A Type IIa diamond has a carbon makeup without chemical impurities, and it is my understanding that the color in a pink diamond is a result of structural anomalies in the crystal lattice (as opposed to chemical impurities, as in many colored stones). I suppose it is fair to say that it is chemically pure, and internally flawless (from a clarity standpoint) but structurally deformed. Very interesting . . .

What a beautiful color! I guess I'm used to a plain old boring oval cut...not sure if I like this cut or not.
