I''m looking for pictures of four-prong settings with the prongs set at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00. I prefer styles with thin bands that are a bit antique looking.

Also, what do you think of these settings, love, hate em? Do you think it makes the diamond look smaller, bigger, or the same as a regular four-prong setting?

I had my original e-ring set with the prongs at 12 3 6 and 9 and everyone loved it including me.

It made the smallish rb (.64c) pop. I wore it with a plain gold w-band and later with a semi-eternity 25th anniversary band. DH preferred the look with only the e-ring and a-band.

you know how some people like and/or dislike that 4 prongers can make a stone look square? well a 4 prong set the way you describe makes them look like a diamond. I don''t know why stones aren''t set like that more or square ones for that matter... I like the idea of having a real "diamond" bahahaha If I set mine on angle it would look so bad rofl

It really does make it look rounder looking. One other thing I thought of is that I tend to bang my rings on the side rather than diagonally, and the prong on each of the sides would help protect the diamond a little more.

Oh I saw the coolest thing today and thought of you LOL I saw a round stone, about oh 1/2-2/3 carat or so and it was in a sixprong setting but it was NOT at 12/6 o''clock. The prongs were at 3/9 so there were prongs on each side but not directly atop or under the diamond and you know what the diamond looked like? a cushion!! I swear I thought it was a cushion until she handed it to me and even then I was like wow... it''s amazing what can happen depending on how you set the prongs!! I''d never look at most rings with 6 prongs and think they looked like a cushion! lol!!

i don''t have a pref but i think that it was said in the past that when you set stones at 12/3/6/9 that you could be exposing areas of the girdle that are prone to being hit more than if you had them the traditional 4 prong way. if you look at the image posted on this page, the fact that the prongs are set the way they are, with two prongs right on the shank, you are exposing more girdle at potential ''hit points'' than if there were prongs there to take some of the brunt. maybe with a thicker girdle stone it wouldn''t be as big of a deal, or get it insured and it doesn''t really matter. but just something to take into consideration.

Any experianced jeweller will tell you that 90% of the chipped girdles they see are on the band sides of the diamond - not the ends - this is because we move our hands side ways rather than back and forward that means moving our upper arm as well.

Ladylovesluxury also has 6 prong head that is set shown in that thread.

My e-ring setting has prongs in the 12 3 6 and 9 position and I love it. I think it lends it a more unique look. I don''t think the style makes my diamond look any bigger. I''ll take some pictures and post it once I get a chance.

mrs salvo, yes i recall that thread, also in there, wink noted that the non-traditional way could 'possibly' result in more damage than the traditional way.

the feeling i got from that thread was that the extra exposure being a danger was still a possibility since the experts were not definitive one way or another, so definitely worth mentioning to someone considering it.

i also tend to drop my ring sometimes (oops!) and the band protects those areas of the exposed girdle, so i am glad my prong orientation is the traditional way because it protects the exposed girdles from hitting the floor/table/whatever first.

I don''t think there is a strong enough arguement to really prove one way is safer or better than the other. Go with what''s most pleasing to your eye and get insurance
