Like most newer members I have been diligently researching and reading posts on this site for several months. My girlfriend and I have started looking at rings.

We have decided on a pear diamond. We are also leaning towards a high polish plain shank ring with a small halo. The cathedral area is the part we are still working on. We like aspects of some of the Tacori rings, but not the entire design.

If you all had $10,000 - $12,000 for the center stone which diamond would you choose? We have looked online and in several stores. We have noticed I t is easier to see differences in person.

Also, suggestions on a setting would be appreciated as well. Looking for a small halo (think Tacori bloom) with a moderate cathedral. Do not need something extremely ornate.

Thank you.

Pears, like other fancy cuts, can be tricky. Can you give your specs & preferences, so we can help you search? Are you interested in a chubby pear, or a more elongated pear; what would be your l x w ratio preference?

Hi and welcome to PS. @Matthews1127 makes good points. There are so many different types of pears. My favorite pears are the chubby and chunky faceted antique pears. But yours and your girlfriend's might be more towards the modern pear that doesnt have chunky facets but more splintery ones. Obviously it comes down to personal preference. Once you narrow down the type of pear you are interested in PSers can help you find just the right one within your budget. Linking some threads for you to read and see what your and your girlfriend's preferences are.

I, too, am a fan of the antique, broad faceting pattern, with little to no contrast across the stone; I’m not a “crushed ice” gal. The beautiful flashes that beam off of those pears are just amaze-balls!!
As long as it’s well cut, and consistent across the diamond, the “bow-tie effect” doesn’t occur, or is, at minimum, difficult to detect.
These are great examples of some of the gorgeous pears, right here, on PS. If you’re looking for a quality Pear, you’ve come to the right place! :mrgreen2:

Hi Clemsonfan,
Like the other PSers have mentioned, nice pears are hard to find...I'll list a few pointers to be aware of.
- pay more attention to LxW because same carat stones can differ widely in LxW
- look for stones where the rounded end looks more like a round brilliant (usually better light return)
- minimize the mushy area down by the point
- look for nice, distinct facets (clearly outlined) that "light up" as the stone turns

Thats a few pointers to get started with. While it is easier to see them in person unfortunately the number that you can see in person is usually
very minimal...some jewelers will bring in 3 for you to choose from...while on-line you have quite a selection. The vendors that we usually work
with have a good return policy so if it just doesnt thrill you when you get it, return it (yes, a pain but you need to love it).

I'll see if I can find a few stones that I can recommend...you need to look at places that have videos so you can see whats going on as the stone
moves. James Allen has nice videos...

Off to look around some...

These are the best I could find at BlueNile...It really helps to bring them up individually and then add them to "Comparison" so you can look at them
rotate side-by-side.

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD03327553
https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD00022731

Even though you have a really nice budget, I'm not finding anything that says "this is the one"...may need to check some other vendors.

JA stones...
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/1.51-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-3643873 This one is pretty nice and is over 10mm
These 3 nice but...would like to find better light return
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/1.41-carat-f-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-4590495

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/1.51-carat-g-color-si1-clarity-sku-3783133

Anyway, that gives you an idea of what to look for...look for the nice facets to stretch out down towards the pointed end as the stone turns.
Also, look for the nice facets to stretch up towards the rounded end.

I was trying to find @cflutist 's pear as I think it's a beautiful shape. I have a pear and the one thing I knew I didn't want was broad shoulders. Nor did I want a skinny pear. Fancy shapes, pears in particular, take a bit more work than RBs. Look at a lot of photos and videos before you shop just to get an idea of what you/she might like.

There was a length to width ratio tool somewhere for fancies that allowed you to play with the various configurations, I'll see if I can find it.

Here it is still on Dave Atlas's site, you'll need Flash to operate it.

Trade preferences are L:W ratio of 1.50 to 1.75. My 3.01 F-SI1 pear is 1.62 right smack in the middle. However, the trend on PS is towards chunky pears at or below 1.50. I prefer more of a teardrop shape. I also don't like the large culets on antique pears, looks like a window to me. It is all a personal preferences.

Gorgeous pear!

Thanks for the help so far everyone. Sorry for not providing more information initially.
  • Leaning towards chubby over elongated pear, but would probably prefer something in the middle
  • Have been looking at G+ color, VS2 (eye clean is ok too)
  • Where can you buy "antique, broad facing faceting" pears? I do not think we have seen any of these when we have looked in person.

If you prefer antique pears then you might want to consider these diamonds.

www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/2-43ct-vintage-pear-diamond-ring-gia-n-vs2/
Do not be concerned about the difference in carats as these two diamonds have similar dimensions. Please consider looking at a warmer colored pear. The warmer antique pears throw off a lovely pastel sparkle. You might consider reaching out to Old World Diamonds along with the vendors that I have linked.

and one more. It's good to look at many to see what you love and don't love to narrow it down to the "one".
