Thanks to all who helped confirm what a great diamond I've stumbled upon:

Now that I've got that part done, I could really use some advice on how to proceed from here. Since both reputable local independent appraisers are booked or out of town, I contacted Rich in Sarasota and he agreed to do the appraisal for me.

So am I supposed to have the loose diamond sent to Rich for inspection, have him send it to me when it checks out, purchase a setting locally, and then have it appraised once again for insurance purposes?

That seems like a bit of a hassle, having it appraised twice since I can't get the pre-purchase appraisal done locally. Any advice? Would it be silly to have the vendor put it in a setting in the first place, and just have Rich confirm that the diamond is essentially as advertised?

Thanks for any input.

If you have a setting in mind, you can probably have it shipped to Rich (from the stone vendor would be easiest, but separate ones will work also). Once Rich appraises the loose stone he can probably have it set locally and then update the appraisal for the finished ring. Check with Rich to see if that works and coordinate...

If you are set on using Rich (great choice btw), ask him his opinion. You may have a certain time restraint. You can DO whatever you want.

It's easier for him to get measurements on the loose diamond. For insurance purposes, I would think that the detail you would get this way would be more beneficial. Also by appraising it loose, then having a followup after setting, you can inspect that it's the same diamond, as well as check to see if it's been damaged during setting.

It's a pain, but you've come this far. Just my opinion.
