I've gone back and forth on several different designs for an E- Ring. Based on what I know from my girlfriend, she likes an antique look, but not to over the top. She loves sapphires, but hasn't said one way onr another if she definitely wants them in her E-ring. She likes side stones. She has recently noticed and pointed out the latest Tiffany add in NYC for thier Novo ring. http://www.tiffany.co.jp/expertise/diamond/rings/engagement_novo.aspx

Based on that, I've decided on the setting below, but with a few modifications.

1. What are your opinions on using sapphires for the side stones (round) or staying with diamonds as shown? I've called Salomon Bros. and they are pretty sure they can get me the setting without any side sones, should I decide to go with Sapphires.

2. I absolutely LOVE the Cushion cut stone stone that Boston Jeff has shown on this site. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/cushion-question-for-cehrabehra-and-others.58597/page-9 it's the 4th post down. (Jeff I hope you don't mind me posting) So this would be the center stone I'd go with, but probably a little smaller, 1.50 - 1.75, somewhere in that range.

So I would love to hear opinions on the use of sapphire side stones or any other thoughts you might have. Thank you!

That''s a very pretty setting! I personally really love the combination of diamonds and sapphires, and I think sapphire side stones would look great in that setting (especially a nice, vibrant blue). It''s a very personal thing, though. If you think your girlfriend would like sapphires, I''d say go for it. It certainly is a time-honored combination.

I think sapphire side stone would look very nice, however, she may not prefer having them in her e-ring. If you were to leave the side stones as diamonds, you could consider replacing the "surprise" diamonds with sapphires. This way there would be a small pop of blue in the ring, without it being the focal point.

I''d find out for sure if she''d want them in her engagement ring or not before I committed to the sapphires.

ditto. It''s a very personal thing.

I personally wouldn''t want them so i would also ask her... and I love sapphires

My next ring is hopefully going to be sapphires and diamonds (a right hand ring), but that setting is gorgeous with all diamonds! I really seriously encourage you to keep it as it is!

9 times out of 10 I will *always* vote for sapphire sidestones! I have them in my e-ring and think they would be stunning in the scott kay you posted. Since you know she loves them I think it makes the ring extra special and unique.

Keep it as it is, or replace only the surprise diamonds with sapphires. I wouldn''t go with sapphire sides unless you know she loves them.

Let me add that I LOVE Tacori E-ring''s setting with sapphires! But it''s design just works them in beautifully. I just don''t see the Scott Kay with sapphires. Now a Leon Mege three stone with larger side sapphires, yes!

Thanks for all the comments. Greatly appreciated! Any comments or thoughts on my choice of center stone, Old mine cut brilliant cushion?

I think sapphires would look great in that setting. That said, she should be the one to decide as it is very personal. I am very biased of course

Well ... I thought it was a pretty & interesting choice ... very good for a guy BTW -- UNTIL I saw the picture of the Tiffany Novo that she sent you.

Are you SURE she doesn't want a similarly delicate pave setting with a single center stone? Or -- a similarly delicate Cushion with small sidestones??

The setting you selected is NOTHING like the Novo ... the differences might not be so apparent to someone who isn't enthralled with jewelery like the gang around here -- but TRUST ME ... it's a world apart.

So ... YES to the old mine brillant cut! A cushion brilliant could work too -- and be more similar to the Novo cut perhaps than the old mine brilliant. The SIZE sounds great!

BUT -- you might want to check out settings more similar to the picture she showed you -- just to see. Guys tend to be drawn to more substatial settings & gals tend to choose delicate, etherial little blingy things. (NOTE: this is a sweeping generalization -- my own setting, which I had a hand in choosing is much beefier than the one you're pondering.) I only mention it because the inspiration picture she forwarded you -- vs. the setting you're drawn to illustrates the point.

ETA: On your setting ... do you see the little double parenthetical grooves alongside the sidestones. Today, in 2007, I would not choose a setting featuring these. I think they're pretty on existing rings .. but I do think they're a kind of design element that can "date" jewelry -- therefore I wouldn't choose a NEW ring that has them at the current time.

Very good points Deco and I agree with you.

pauly, I''ve seen the NOVO in person and I LOVED it. seriously, If I didn''t already have a stone I would have been on a hunt for something similar. the good news is, I think you''re on the right track with the cushion and you might check out Ritani for similar dainty novo type settings.
check out silverlily''s cushion in a Ritani setting..

Wow ... that REALLY DOES look like the Tiffany Novo! Ritani settings are great because we never hear about lost stones or quality problems ... they fit well with the matching wedding bands ... and they have such a subtle sparkle that they don''t compete with or detract from the center stone.

I think it could be a GREAT CHOICE & get her very close to the ideal picture ...

Does Ritani have a three stone version of this micropave line?

Thanks you from the comments. To be honest though, she doesn''t know what she wants! :) If think she was drawn to the stone in the Novo add from Tiffany, and not so much the band. In that respect, I agree, it is a beautiful stone. She''s made several comments though about how much she likes rings with engraving on the band, as is the Scott Kay. And she''s also commented many times that she loves the sidestones. I''m trying to put it all together, but it''s difficult. In the end I think she will absolutely love the Scott Kay, I just wish I could find more pictured of it, especially form the side. She''s made several comments about how she doesn''t like it when the center stone sits very high, or looks to propped up, she says she would get it caught on everything. I tend to agree with her on this, I don''t particularly like that look either, but I guess that depend on the depth of the stone, or how low it''s set in the band? (Please correct me if I''m wrong) Hard to describe for a guy, but I''m sure you probably know what I''m talking about.

yep: here''s the 3 round version. there is also one with pear sides, i''m guessing Ritani would probalby do any stone combo someone wanted.

Thanks to everyone for thir comments! I''ll let you know how it turns out.

I''d say no on the sapphires for the e-ring unless she very specifically requested them. You can always get a wedding band with sapphire accents...but if she showed you that tiffany, I don''t think she''s got sapphires in mind for the e-ring.

Without sapphires
