Hi all!

Sorry if this is the wrong forum. If it is, please let me know and I can remove it.

I'm wondering about peg head settings and if I could get some advice.. if anyone has them, and if they could share their experiences/opinions.

Here is a link to my e-ring. It is a 6 claw prong/tulip setting with the head assembly in platinum and the shank in rose gold. I'm really not a fan of the cathedral settings, and was hoping for something simple and elegant, but I'm not sure how much I want to sacrifice durability-wise. I'm not very active, and I have a desk job, but still want to have something that I can wear almost every day without having to worry about it.

Are these types of settings super delicate to the point where I will be frustrated / only want to wear it on special occasions?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

Imho your ring isnt a cathedral setting. It is a peg head. Can you explain what you dont like about it and what you would prefer? Or am I misreading and you are saying you want the JA setting that was linked?

Hi! Thanks for your reply and sorry for any confusion. The linked ring is the ring I am looking at and it is a peg head. I’m not familiar with other variations of solitaire settings, but know of cathedrals and know they add more security but I do not like the look of them. I’m just concerned about peg heads and was hoping to hear from people on whether they are a good choice or not. Sorry if I wasn’t clear in my first post!

Peg head should be fine. My wife's latest is a four prong peg head with a 1.69ct set in it and there's been no issues with daily wearing.

If you want a setting that isn't a peg head, then maybe something like this?

Thanks for this. Super helpful to know :)

the setting you sent will be my exchange option if this one doesn’t work out haha. I was a sucker for the scalloped/tulip head…

They also have this queen's crown style.

The 'peg' of a peg head is a part of the head that extends out of the bottom and goes into a hole in the shank part of the ring. It's sort of a rivet from the bottom. What you showed is a peg head.

A cathedral is part of the shank. It's the wings that come up from the sides to somewhere in the middle or so of the head. You can have either or both. The peg is part of the head, the cathedral is part of the shank.

Done properly a peg is just fine. This is purely an artistic question, not a structural one.

Here's an example of a ring that has both.

Thanks. I did see that one and it's a contender as well. I guess I'll just have to wait and see for myself if the tulip setting will work out.

I'm not sure if you'd have any comments on this, but would an H set in rose gold look warmer/more yellow? That's partially why I had the prongs set in platinum - to help it look more white.

Thank you :) I guess I'm just concerned or curious I suppose about the liklihood of it getting knocked and popping off.. But seems like it would have to be a pretty significant impact..

Not necessarily. If the diamond that is being set has ideal light return and performance, then the setting color will have little to no impact since the diamond will be reflecting almost all of the light that enters the top (table and crown areas).

An H colored stone is going to look pretty white in any color gold. You’ll be fine.

Thank you. Very out of my element and makes it harder without being able to see things in person.

I think I'll keep the platinum head in the order as I've read it's more secure for the prongs holding the diamond, but good to know it won't impact color if I decide to swap for an all rose gold setting.
