Hi everyone, a quick intro: I'm a brand spanking new member who never gave much thought to diamonds in her life...until a week ago when my boyfriend asked me to choose a shape (for an engagement ring). I barely wear jewelry apart from funky watches and a silver ring, so just thinking about the herculean task of choosing the right diamond without getting ripped off is making my knees weak, but it was very heartening to read through some of your experiences--if you guys can do it I certainly hope I can!

Lengthy intro aside, I'm already getting stuck even at this early stage. The only things I do know is that I want a solitaire, set in a simple band that stays out of the way as much as possible. Knowing nothing else about diamonds, I am really attracted to pears. Don't get me wrong, I love the traditional round shape, but apart from the aesthetic appeal there is a personal significance with that pear shape. Also, my fingers/body shape takes more kindly to angular shapes (although the princess cut looks a little off on me for some reason): the cushion is also beautiful but for now I'm starting with pears.

I know pears are a fancy shape so I have a lot of work cut out for me picking the stone without the help of the normal GIA cut grades as a reference, but before I go down that path, is it a blasphemous/ridiculous idea to want a "horizontal" setting? Like I mentioned, there is a personal significance for the shape, but on its side so it's actually parallel with the band instead of perpendicular, if that makes sense.

I haven't been able to find an example of it online anywhere, so I'm thinking it's a impossible setting or a big no-no. I certainly don't want to put any diamond at a disadvantage so knowing this will help me move on!

Thanks everyone for your help!

You mean the length of the pear is in line with the shank? That would limit the size of the stone length you can get or the ring will be very uncomfortable to wear as the stone will get in the way of the finger.

yup, and i do understand it will limit the length. however i''m fine with that. when i was looking at some in person anything more than 2.5 carats looks ridiculous on me (unfortunately!). i was also thinking that since marquise shapes are sometimes set horizontally, it will be the same concept but with a pear.

Should be possible, just not common. As you said, some marquise are set that way.

thanks for your thoughts, i really appreciate it! i''m going to try and talk to some jewelers--hopefully i won''t get thrown out heh.

Hi Jayma

Personally I see no reason why you couldn''t have a pear set east west, it could work well with a bezel setting rather than the traditional solitaire. It is an unusual way to have a pear set but sometimes breaking from the norm can work extremely well, but it could also depend on the size of the diamond and your finger size too.

I would have a chat with the vendor once you find the stone you want, some do custom and might be able to work with you on a design.

If you want something different and unique there is no reason not to have it (IMO). You may have to go with a custom setting
since and E/W pear is not common. Onegarnetgirl on etsy.com has some E/W set pears in sterling silver that I will give you a link
to just to give you an idea. Probably not the type of setting you are looking for but it wil give you an idea of an E/W pear. (actually
if it were me I would order one and wear it for a while to help finalize the decision).

Thanks so much for the heads up lorelei and tyty! I did some paper cutouts to see what it might look like on my finger...look forward to hitting the pavement and doing some field work!

I am almost positive that there is a setting like this in the "Show Me Your Pears!" thread - will go and see if I can find it. I also have vague memories of some arty jewelry store carrying similar ones - the Clay Pot, maybe? I remember them looking lovely - now, to find images for you!

Okay: a pear tsavorite with some decoration from Widget, not quite halfway down p. 6 of the pear thread ....

As for the other, it''s not the Clay Pot ... and it doesn''t seem to be Krikawa''s ... perhaps I was just thinking of Celtgrrl''s gorgeous remake? Regardless, I very much look forward to seeing what you come up with - I have a soft spot for bezeled pears!

Very Interesting idea. I really like the etsy one in the silver bezel. It would make quite a conversation piece AND have meaning.

Found the magazine pic!

I demand you all stop right now tugging at my closeted pear tendencies!

Those etsy rings are gorgeous and oh so appealing.

I''m sorry I offered nothing of worth to this thread
