Hello all, I have researched and researched and thought I would be able to pick the perfect engagement ring with general guidelines from my gf. Sadly I think I have confused myself even more. The part I am struggling with is the center stone for a halo setting. Will 100% go with a pear cut diamond . Through looking online at James Allen I thought this would be easy. Today I went to local jewellers and I could not believe the prices that were being asked for the pear diamonds compared to online sites.. it honestly made me think I have been missing something and wanted to reach out to this group for assistance.

For some background information. Both of us are in a public service field so we both work hard for minimal pay. Fortunately we both have been blessed with advancement in our fields so we live comfortably but also don't feel comfortable with spending a large sum for a ring. I of course want this ring to be something that she is proud of.

The budget that I am looking at for the stone alone is no more than $2,500. The ring would be set in a single halo setting with a white gold band. I would prefer to purchase around 3/4 diamond as the center stone.

Would it be possible to direct me to a few stones that I can get the most bang for my budget that she would love or perhaps sone advice. Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the quick reply on short time. I will review each of these!! I was curious if the criteria would even be possible. After today I was disheartened at the big box stores.

I'd be disheartened form the big box store due to the stone quality alone....:lol-2:

OP...
- pay attention to the mm length/width vs the carat weight. Pears of the same weight can vary widely in size. With your budget you can get about
7.5mm in length.
- minimize the mushy areas...the points contain a lot of mush (that does not reflect light well). Look for bigger, crisp, well define facets that flash on/off
as the stone moves ( maximize these type of facets)

For the JA stones here are the possible halo settings.

This with a pave wedding band would be pretty especially if you want a more low key look due to your jobs.

Thank you to everyone that has responded. I'm going to sit down today and try to hammer out the diamonds for comparison. This is exciting and nerve racking at the same time.

With a pear, one of the most important things (to me) is its overall shape. A classic teardrop is best, but not wide and flattened at the shoulders. For an example of a pear that is too wide and flat, google jessica simpson's first engagement ring.
