Im lookin to buy my girlfriend a pear shaped engagement ring. she wants around a carat or less says she doesnt like rings with big stones (go figure). is there much difference in a ideal cut vs excellent cut? are there any other factors i should be aware of

pears are not graded for cut. I would recommend either looking at different pears in person, or if you are shopping online, going with a vendor who provides images and ASET images. the ASET images give an idea of the cut quality of the pear.

Make sure you can see images of the stone, at least, so you can see if it has a more prominent bow-tie (grey area across the middle). When I was scavenging for pears, I really liked James Allen's site, since there are images, and I prefer a 'chubby' pear and could easily weed out those that were just too long relative to width. You might want to find out if your girlfriend prefers a certain shape of pear. These two could serve as examples:

- Pick a pleasing shape...usually not too long and no shoulders.

- Make sure it has a minimal bow-tie. Make sure it reflects white and not dark (leakage).

- Pick one that has a pleasing faceting pattern. Try to find one that has distinct facets and not a "mushy" look.
This diamond shows "mush" down at the point. Sometimes it can just be the way the picture is taken...but I dont
think so in this case.

Post pics or links to the stones for opinions. You can not pick pears by the numbers. You must see images of the stone.
Aset images will give us an idea of the light return. I have found James Allen to be the best place to shop for a pear.

If you give us your budget we can see whats out there.

I would ask Good Old Gold to find you a pear. They are amazing at finding fancy's. Ask for Rhino.
