Pave stone fell out already!

First off, I want to thank everyone so much for the kind words and encouragement. You've made me feel so much better about the situation with the ring, and have helped me to focus on what's most important--that the man I love wants to commit the rest of his life to me!

Anyways, I was feeling so great about everything and then this afternoon, all the sudden I look down at my ring and I see this huge black spot on the band. After staring at it for a few seconds I realize that it's actually a big hole where one of the pave stones used to be. It fell out of the band! I am completely horrified. My fiance said the ring is under warranty so I'm assuming that means they will replace the stone for free. However, I have only had the ring for about a month now. I've read that sometimes pave stones fall out but should this really have happened already?! Should I be concerned about the craftsmanship of the ring? Are there specific questions I should ask the jeweler when I bring it in to have the stone replaced?

Oh, boy. There is pave and there is pave. Even the best can come out in some circumstances, but from what we saw on the other thread, I don't have high hopes for the quality of this ring. But it is really good they have a warranty and will replace it free.

Oh no, that's a shame! - just when you were starting to feel better - unfortunately, yes, it could be indicative of the quality of the setting - but then again, it could be a one time thing. Hard to tell - at this point have it repaired and see what happens. If you keep losing stones, I think you have a good case for a refund for the setting. Sorry about this!

I'm really sorry. I know there is nothing you can do about this. I wish you had found us during your return period, I really do. If this was me and I could get my fiance on board, I might try to return it now based on poor workmanship. I know you could get a better diamond and ring for that amount of money. But do know that even very expensive rings can lose a pave stone. I just don't think you should be losing one after a month.

I think this might be my breaking point and I may have to actually see if the ring can still be returned. I don't want to have to worry constantly about stones falling out.

I've had two "promise" rings. The first was a really dainty, 1/2 eternity pave band with milgrain. I think the diamonds were bead-set. Anyway, I had it one day and a diamond fell out. I was livid! We took it to the jewelry store we bought it from and they told me that can actually happen when they go up or down too many sizes (outside of the safe limit for re-sizing a band that has pave). Ultimately their fault. They were happy to refund us the money. We ended up with a sturdier and better built (u-prong I think???) diamond wedding band - the jeweller we bought it from guaranteed that no diamonds would fall out within a year - and it's been over 2 years and the ring is still going strong.

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't get to heated about the diamond falling out. Like DS said, it can happen no matter who made the ring.

But it's probably in your best interest to move on to something of better quality/mind clarity while you still have the chance (if you can, of course).

I'm so sorry to hear this, especially after that stress over in your other thread! I'd feel the same way, it'd be at my breaking point too. What does your FI think? If you're still concerned with hurting his feelings and you still like the sentimental value of the ring, bring it in and they should fix it for free. I'd ask them to triple check for any other loose stones.

Then again, between this and the black inclusions that were bothering you in the other pave stones, it does seem like a good opportunity for a return. I'm sure your FI would be more understanding given everything that's happened. If he's on board, then I'd definitely try the return. I'd hate for you to spend the rest of your life worrying about your ring instead of enjoying it!

I have to admit, I'd love to see you get some sort of refund, if you can on your ring, and get advice from here for a replacement you'd love. I've been amazed by how even small budgets are able too be maximised to lovely effect here through the experience of the members of this site.

Normally we also remind people that pave shanks are not for everyone. If you do use your hands a lot for lifting, gardening, etc... if you want to work out at the gym without removing rings... another style might be best for you. Please understand I'm not saying that's what happened in your case, but you might want to consider your activities and lifestyle as you consider whether this is the right ring for you.

I'm sorry you are going through this too. I hope it all works out for you. I can't remember who said it but the sizing of a ring with pave stones can be a nightmare. I had a band of pave stones and after sizing the fell out one after another. The jeweler ended up having to remake the ring in my size first and the added the diamonds. I never lost a stone after that 15 years later. My sister in law took her ring in to be cleaned and checked right after the wedding and during the cleaning a diamond fell out. She had to have her ring sized down two sizes. Hopefully you can get this all resolved soon. Again I am truly sorry all this is happening and i hope you can get back to enjoying you beautiful ring soon.

You need to think of a ring set with tiny diamonds in much the same way you think about tires on your car. No matter how new and perfect the car, you can get a nail in one of those tires on the way home from the dealer and there is no warranty on road hazards. You might need to have the tire fixed or even may need to replace it. It is a part of the downside of ownership of things which cost money to keep in good condition. Folks who own yachts where I now live are highly accustomed to constant repair and revision of perfectly wonderful ships that demand attention all the time. It is part of their chosen hobby, to keep their yacht running properly.

Don't get upset by the loss of a small diamond. It can be fixed nicely and is way less problematic that having the main stone get lost or losing the entire ring. In the total scheme of things, a little expense on a piece of jewelry is no worse than replacement of a light bulb or an air filter in your air conditioner. It is so much more a mental hurdle due to sentimentality that these other examples, but keeping an eye on what really is important in life overcomes these little setbacks and surprises. The loss of a small diamond is generally a long way from a reasonable reason to ask for a refund although the initial emotional response tends to be stronger than the long term, more thoughtful approach to solving a simple problem.

I sure hope the stone replacement goes well and that you don't have frequent loss of small stones. Frequent loss is another matter and does tend to show questionable workmanship. One thing you should do is have the original maker do any and all repairs and replacements so that if there is a long term problem, they cannot blame it on another workman or another firm.

It's pretty much the nature of delicate pave unfortunately--even the finest made settings can still lose stones. To avoid it completely, you'd have to switch to a solitaire or maybe a channel set setting. Channel set is usually very secure, but not everyone likes the look.
