I was hoping to get help with deciding on a pave ering and matching WB.

When I first started reading here I thought most people liked this type of setting diamonds on a band and recently I''ve been seeing a few that seem like they would advise against them.

I would like to get help with deciding the pros and cons of having pave on the sides of an ering and WB.

A few concerns are how secure the stones are held in place, cleaning, daily wear, and any others you all love or dislike or have experienced with pave side stones.

Thanks in advance!

Mirre,
If you do a search using the keywords of pave and ultrasonic or lost melee, you''ll bring up all the pros and cons. There has been many discussion on how this varies according to the metal (WG vs platinum), the designer (Beaudry, Leon Mege, etc vs other generic), one sided or 3 sided and how often it is worn (daily or babied).

Mirre, I''m having the same thoughts on what my future WB will be. My future e-ring has pave on all sides, and I''m contemplating a pave band to go with it, but a small one because the ering itself is thick. I intend to look for one with smooth edges and pave in the middle of the band to sit next to the e-ring. Here''s a picture of it from the side.

I''d like to see what you pick out.

To add to that last post, I''ve done some research on it, too, through PS. You''ll get varying opinions as far as the pave, and depending on the variables that Chrono posted. I was worried about the wear and tear on the ring, and from what I remember, I read that there have been people that have had pave stones pop out and the ring manufacturer normally replaces them for free. There have also been people who have had no issues with their pave.

If you get your rings from a quality designer, I would imagine you wouldn''t have too much of a problem from the experiences I''ve read about on here.

mirre, i think you really have to decide what type of lifestyle you have and take that into consideration. I personally adore pave, but it is usually advised to keep it away from the ultrasonic so some don''t like that they can''t get their main stones super clean. also, even the very well made high end pave can lose a stone. for some, they don''t mind the hassle of just getting it replaced, others don''t what the headache. IMO, pave rings need to be babied and treated delicately. they are not 24/7 type rings. So, if you don''t mind babying the rings a bit and the cleaning issues and the possible loss of stones from time to time, pave might be for you. If you are one who wants to really wear the ring all the time, know your header on jewelry etc. then something more sturdy like mara''s set or a paveless type setting might be a better option. chrono is right though, tons of threads on pave, loss stones, ultrasonics here if you want to do the search.

Mirre, it really comes down to your personal style, and what you think would suit you.

Have you been looking at rings with pave? If you have, do you have pictures of what you''ve considered?

SweetJetta I really like your''s it''s very different and pretty!

Here is the one I''d like to have. I''m pretty sure this is the one that I had tried on at the jeweler I visited because I looked up the designers they carry and this is the only one I could find that looked like the one I tried.

I really liked how it looked on my hands. I have really small fingers and the others overpowered my finger or was uncomfortable because the detailing went too far down each side of the band.

Its a knife edge with the pave only on the top so the band and ering sit flush against one another and don''t rub the stones. (At least thats what it looks like... I don''t remember if I tried the wb with the ering or not).

I really want to make another trip back to the jeweller though to make sure that''s the one I really like.

Thank you, I''m kinda in love with it...

I love that set, it''s delicate and very pretty. As long as the stones don''t rub, you shouldn''t have a problem, unless for some reason one of the pave diamonds is loose, that''s what our jeweler told us anyway. I have looked into what it would cost if that did happen, and one pop out, and the average is about $30 to replace the stone because they''re so small.

Good luck with your search - I tried looking on here for some of the topics I read about it, but my web is being slow today, so it keeps giving me an error when I search.

Looks like you''ve got a beauty in mind...

Thank you so much SweetJetta! I can''t wait to see what WB you pick for yours.

I really hope BF gets it for me. I''ve seen many others and even there at the store there were a few that I liked better than this one but as far budget-wise (which I have no idea what it would be but don''t want to spend a ton) this one was very pretty even though it''s simple for the cost. It looked great to me. And I keep thinking that since the setting doesn''t really cost as much as some of the others if the budget is bigger than I''m thinking then maybe I could get a bigger or nicer stone.

Not sure about bigger though because (lucky for BF) anything over .75 probably just wouldn''t look very good on my finger. Seems like .65 was just about perfect... looked big and had great coverage without being "too much".

I have an idea of what I want, but technically the ring isn''t mine - still LIW status - but I''ve had some fun looking for them, that way I''m prepared when that time comes...

Nothing wrong with being prepared.

Mirre - I myself have contemplated getting Pave because of some of the things I learned about it from Pricescope however, the ring I adore is pave/micropave and I will just have to get used to the fact that i need to be gentle and not abuse my ring like I do my current ones. (I never take them off and do EVERYTHING with them)

Good luck. Keep us posted on what you get!

I''m still undecided on my setting, but I do know I want pave. My dream ring would have a ering and wband with 3-sided pave. However, there are a lot of cons with this. I have done a lot of serious thought about this and opened a few topics regarding this to get opinions from those who decided to go with it or not.

Even with pave just on the top there are issues. Even if you don''t have diamonds rubbing against diamonds you could have diamonds rubbing against the metal. I would really search the forum for topics on the designer you choose and pave issues. Even an exceptional designer can have stones pop out... they will replace it, but you have to go through the trouble of shipping your ring to them if they are not local or going into their place and leaving your ring. Like was mentioned, it''s not a style to wear 24/7 and it''s gotta fit into your lifestyle.

Mirre, does the surprise diamond rub on the band?

I''ve been obsessing on the issue (and 1/2, 3/4 or full eternity) a while now and haven''t come to a final decision... I''m totally battling with what I want vs. what is practical. Make sure you search the forum and read all you can about it to make an informed decision. Good luck on your decision!

Sera the surprise diamond is another reason I was concerned about this particular set. It looks like the surprise diamond is set inward. Like if you look down on top of the ring I think it tapers inward toward the center stone so the surprise diamond isn''t touching the actual wedding band. I''ll have to check to make sure though. That would make the most sense to me though since they are made to be a set.

Yeah, definitely make sure. I know there are designers that make their pave bands to be worn together and there are some that do not recommend it.

Chances are you a stone WILL fall out. If that bothers you then don''t go with pave. If the look is worth it then go for it. I think pave is beautiful but like to get pave pieces local from B&M that will replace any of the melee for free.

I don''t know if my BF would want to purchase a diamond online or not. I know all the pros to it but I''m not sure how he feels about the idea. I''ve seen many posts that have mentioned knowing what size diamond you will be getting in order to purchase the right size setting then send the setting to whoever you buy the diamond from and let them set it in case something happens to the diamond.

The ering setting (without center stone) from a local B&M is around $1400 I have found it online for around $900 I know that''s not a huge difference but my question is this.

Let''s say if a pave stone comes out the local jeweller would fix it for me.

If I were to buy it at the local jeweller and have the center
stone set by someone else. Would the local jeweller still fix the pave even though I didn''t get the center stone done by them? Or should I just ask them specifically?

I''m trying to have a checklist of what I need to ask them and check on with this ring. I know I need to find out how well the ering and band sit together, if the surprise diamond rubs the band or not, and what kind of policy they have on fixing/replacing lost stones.

We bought my Tacori setting that DOES replace any missing melee (and I have lost one in a U/S). We did not buy our diamond through them, just the setting. Honestly for me it is piece of mind. Even if online places will replace the melee shipping will get expensive for sure! Just ask them.

Tacori E-ring did you buy your ring from Tacori themselves or from a jeweller who carried them. This ring is ArtCarved but it would be coming from a local jeweller who just carries the brand. If they don''t fix the melee in house and it would have to be sent to ArtCarved to fix it maybe their policy would be to send it in for me? Does that even happen? I guess these are questions I just need to find out for sure from them.

So I know pave could be a little risky compared to other ways of setting small diamonds but is there any particular metal that secures it better in pave or are they mostly the same? This particular setting is in Palladium but I''m wondering if finding something similar in a different metal would be better.

I don''t think you can buy directly from Tacori. We bought it through a local B&M. I have actually lost two stones (since 2005). One was a diamond melee which they fixed at the B&M. Took a few days. The second was a sapphire and they sent my ring back to Tacori (to make sure the stone matched). That took a few weeks but they didn''t charge me anything. They even covered the shipping.

It's likely I'll be saying the exact same things that everyone else here did before me - but perhaps my response will better affirm the facts.

My ering (and future wedding band) is pave and I love it. I have worn the ering for 8 months so far with no problems whatsoever. I have my ring cleaned at the local jeweler about once every 3 weeks on average (because I haven't invested in a home cleaner yet). I do not wear the ring to bed, in the shower, and usually not to the gym. I take it off when I'm going to be putting soap on my hands, so I won't have to clean it too often.

Pave is a gorgeous, bling-y look and it's a wonderful alternative to expensive side diamonds. I have not had any of my fifty little one-pointers fall out (knocking on wood), but the tiny diamonds are quite inexpensive and easy to replace.

Then there are the obvious down sides - you have to be slightly more careful with pave than with a standard solitaire (although I am really hard on my hands to begin with), and there are many more nooks and crannies for dirt and grime to settle within. I have heard that it's better to avoid ultrasonic cleaners for pave. But that's about it, I guess. I vote for it, though - the pros far outweigh the cons as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you all so much for your responses!

therube, your''s were great! Thanks for comparing for me. I liked how you put that you get the "blingy" look! That''s what I liked about this ring it looked very pretty and shiny without being too BOLD it was dainty on my finger.

Tacori thanks for your help. I bet most jewellers have the same or similar policies to your''s.

I know there are a few questions that I''ll need to ask the jeweller but most of those are questions I''ll need to ask them for whichever ring I choose anyway, not just the one with pave. What their policy is on lost stones, for example.

I''m so excited!

Now I just have to wait.

My tendency would be to recommend buying the stone online and then getting a setting from a local jeweler. I would ask about stone replacement policies before buying.

Actually they don''t always so be sure to ask. I was looking at a pink sapphire pave band at another B&M and they laughed in my face when I asked. They said their work was quality, they have been around for 70+ years, they don''t *need* to replace them for free b/c it would be MY fault if I lost a stone not theirs, blah blah....

38.gif
I would never buy from them now. I got pave hoops for x-mas and the FIRST thing I wanted to know was what their missing pave policy was.
34.gif

Loosing a stone would be your fault! HA! I would think that if they thought their work was of such "great" quality they would guaratee that it wouldn't come out and if it did replace it. Seems like what someone with GOOD customer service and wanted to get and keep customers would do. But I suppose they aren't worried about such things.

I've tried to read the PS pave threads to find the best way to clean pave and I'm just not figuring it out.

US Cleaners seem to not be advised because the pave is delicate but I saw someone else had posted that the reason stone come loose is because dirt and grime get pack in under the stones and makes them loose and that you can use a US Cleaner if you keep it clean from when you get it. I would assume that using the Windex or Amonia solutions with a baby (soft) toothbrush wouldn't be advised because of the bristles getting in and around the pave.

What's the best, right or safest way to clean it?

Could you just soak it in the Windex or Amonia solution for a few minutes and rinse it off inbetween getting good cleanings from the jeweller?

My thoughts exactly! Loosing a melee happens with *normal* wear. I think most people do not know how fragile pave is and never think of asking. I am sure it would not be that expensive to replace a melee but I guess it would add up (plus it is the principle!) I usually just soak my ring (in the jar cleaner) or use that gel cleaner that has a toothbrush. Once in awhile I will use my u/s on low (high was when I lost it).

mirre: I am in LOVE with your moggy avatar, OMG what a cutie. Do you have any more pictures? PLEASE?

Re. The pave, I do not have a local jeweller I can trust but if I did I would have pave; it is beautiful.

If you are prepared for maintenance costs and the inconvenience of not having your ring for repairs from time to time....

I wonder if there are risks wearing 2 pave rings together, with rubbing? I would wear my e-ring on my right hand and w-band on left.

Steel, I am sorry, I don''t have any other pictures of it, it is not my cat

. I came across it when I was looking for cute animal pictures and I just love it too. It''s so adorable.
