Hello everyone, I am new to the forum, but have been lurking for a while now. I am about to start medical school, and figured it would be the perfect time to ask for my girlfriends hand.

I am looking for a white gold pave setting with a halo, and main stone as big as possible while remaining eye clean, with a focus on the cut. What I have been looking at are in the .47 range, VSI, and G-H in color. I know she likes princess cuts, and thin bands. I particularly liked one with a round halo, and a princess cut set as a "kite" as they called it.

I have had bad luck locally, as the diamonds seem overpriced, but am not sure my options when it comes to buying the stone online, and buying the setting and mounting it locally. A few places kept going on an on about the importance of a warranty to redo the rhodium plating.

I will link a setting a really liked.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Does she like kite set princes cuts? It is not everyones taste so perhaps sticking to more traditional is better unless she has said it is what she wants

Is your budget for the diamond and the setting?

you need the diamond and setting for 1500, or just the setting for 1500?

My apologies, 1500 for both, and it is a soft budget that I would very much love to adhere to. I could go up to 2k though.

As for the kite setting, it was more me. Now that I give it more thought, her tastes lend to more antique (hence the pave halo), so I would be better off without the kite setting.

Thanks again!

Unfortnately, fo a good quality pave setting it might eat up your whole budget

And if you love pave I really would not recommend compromising on the pave.

Do you think that she wold love a smaller diamond in a pave setting or a larger solitaire that you can upgrade later on?

If she likes antique settings, do you think she would prefer a round to a princess since it is more traditional? Or has she said she wants a princess...

Great suggestion, Dreamer! Nice diamond and setting!

To the OP, it might also be worth checking with Bill Pearlman and/or his staff to see if they have any suggestions on a center diamond that would fit your budget. The quality of Beverly K's settings is very good. And Bill Pearlman and his staff are very easy to work with.

I cannot vouch for this vendor but someone recently got a setting from them that is gorgeous (thread here).

If their stuff generally looks as nice as hers I am impressed by the value. Here is a halo for a princess.

I also second DD's suggestion. I love Beverley K.

Oh, and one more.

The website says that is shown with a .5 ct. Good for perspective.

There is this A. Jaffe halo from Pearlmans: http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-specials/bridal-closeout/rings/26II1/0/

When I was kicking around switching to a halo, I talked to Bill at length about that setting and he said it could accomodate a smaller stone than 6.5mm (1 ct). You would need to ask him exactly how small you could go.

This .64 from Blue Nile (assuming it is eye clean) would be a great choice if you could go up a bit in budget: http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search#diamonds_pid=LD01705309

Hope this helps!

I would like to co-sign CBL. The quality at EternityDiamonds is very good as are the prices.

Thanks everyone for all the help you have given me.

To address the cushion cut, I am sure she would be just fine with one, although I have the feeling she would not be able to tell much difference between a cushion and princess. So whichever was a better value would be the one I would pick.

Regarding all the lovely settings you have presented, I have narrowed it down to two thus far. She is a fan of thin bands, with pave diamonds along them, this causes me to rule out This pearman unless I could see some better pictures of how sparkly the band is.

I like This Pearlman closeout halo pending the center stone. (great suggestion). Although I think the center stone would put me above my budget, and am not looking to (but not opposed to) purchase the wedding band. I just think my money may go further without.

I also really like this Square princess cut Halo by Eternity.

Thanks again!

EDIT - this is a nicer stone (BGD signature stone that you can upgrade in the future if you desire.

This setting with this diamond would be very pretty!

You have some really great options!! Please keep us updated. I have always loved that Beverly K and I am also interested in the Eternity Diamonds settings. Excited to see what you come up with!

I think I am coming close to my decision, I have decided on the Princess Cut Halo by Eternity along with a Brian Gavin diamond. This puts me squarely in my price range. I am in the process of e-mailing them now, but can I assume this will be eye-clean. If any of you have some suggestions away from this, please please let me know.

I decided against buying a cast, because I don't feel confident doing that much legwork on my own. I am pretty sure that I can send the diamond to eternity, but would prefer it if I could send the setting to Brian Gavin, so I am seeing if this is possible.

Thanks again!

That setting is lovely.

Is that a signature diamond? I thought those were all AGS0 princess cuts...

I misspoke, it is a Brian Gavin Signature Hearts and Arrows. I am still new to all this :)

Which diamond did you pick? The link above takes me to a GIA princess cut

Hi, can I suggest a slightly different setting by Eternity? http://www.eternitydiamonds.com/engagement-rings/diamond-engagement-ring/Monique-Princess-Cut-Diamond-with-Diamond-Frame-and-Band-by-Eternity-(.43-ctw.)-154.htm

This one allows for a flush fit wedding band, which is important to a lot of woman and costs only a little bit more. If you can, I would get this one instead.

Congratulations!
I like how the halo of this one softens the sharpness of the princess. Looks more feminine this way.

I completely agree with the above posts about This Eternity Halo, and have decided to go with it. The diamond I am choosing is the Brian Gavin Hearts and Arrows above. I am just a little confused about what "N/A" means under the cut section. Would any of you hesitate to send the diamon to Eternity to have them mount it, or suggest a different princess cut entirely?

Thanks!

That is not a BGD signature H&A that you linked -- that is a round cut from them. The diamond you linked is a princess cut diamond.

Do you want a princess or a BGD H&A? The diamond you linked is a virtual stone as far as I can tell, which means that BGD does not have the diamond in house. I would suggest sticking to in house diamonds, especially for princess cuts and in your price range, because the extra shipping to call in the virtual stones will cost a big chunk of your budget.

I think what is confusing is that there are princess cuts as well as cushions in BGDs H&A inventory. That .47 princess is listed in their
H&A inventory. I assume they have it but havent loaded the docs or pics for it yet. Call BGD and they should be able to tell you about
the stone and send you images.

Its kind of confusing!

Sounds like a bit of an error in their listings!
