Patriotism with gold and diamonds?

I'd like to take my family to New York next year for the grand opening of the Freedom Tower. I am thinking about designing, with the help of my jewelers, a freedom tower made out of white gold and/or diamonds. Maybe have some of the big triangles that form the building in gold, the others in diamonds (?)

I am considering two uses, and wonder if you think it's a good idea or ridiculous.

One would be a lapel pin for my jacket. It would need to be small, no more than an inch or 1.25 inches.

The other would be earrings for my wife. Would the women on here wear such a thing or do you think it's too corny? If it's a good idea, I'd like to surprise my wife with them rather than asking her beforehand (I know some of you will say that's a mistake, but that's my plan at this point.)

You have great taste as I have told you before... The lapel pin I like, the earrings, no.

If you're doing it as a lapel pin, I'd recommend engraving the building design on the gold shape - I'd even consider doing it in silver. Personally, I would forego the diamonds to let the clarity of the design stand through.

The earrings surprise? Only you know your wife well enough to answer! She might be charmed, or she might be baffled. To help you decide, look at the jewelry she wears on a regular basis - does she wear substantial or dangling earrings often? Does she like geometric patterns in her clothing or jewelry? Is she, too, deeply patriotic?

If the earrings were abstract enough so that people wouldn't know they are to represent a building unless told, I think they're a great idea. If obviously a building, though, not so much.

May I suggest a pendant for your wife instead? Maybe on a longer chain? I like the design but not for earrings.

But, on second thought, I really love jewelry and have particular preferences, and there are other pieces that I would far rather have. I think it is lovely to go there, but maybe skip the jewelry part. Or just let her go in Tiffany or Cartier and buy a souvenir for the trip instead?
