Hi everyone. I''m hoping to set a stone for a RHR very soon but I''m on a budget. I spoke to a woman about her possibly making a ring for me. She say''s she can use any metal I want for any type of setting and mentioned that palladium is a lot less expensive than white gold and will hold it''s color better too. She can use sterling too if I really want. Have you used palladium before? How hard is it? I have an antique pearl ring made from it but otherwise no experience with it.

If you check out the "biggest jewellery regrets" thread that''s currently active in Hangout Gecko talks about some of her issues with palladium, it''s one of the most helpful reviews I''ve seen so far since she seems to be one of the only people who has had a palladium set for any length of time at this point.

Uh oh. I''ll check it out.

I have a palladium semi-bezel. I had it for a year. It held up well for that year and remained shiny, which I liked. Brian Gavin told me when he set my stone that it was very hard to work with. I have to say that the
thing I liked best was how the metal retained it''s color and shine.

Oops - I just realized, referencing a "biggest regrets" thread to answer your question probably wasn't the best choice!

She does address the brittleness issue, which was my biggest palladium "con".

where is this biggest regrets thread?? is it on the sticky?

Just don''t confuse palladium or 950 palladium with palladium white gold....lotsa that in some of the threads.
Palladium white gold uses palladium as one of the key "bleaching" agents to turn the yellow alloy white or kind of a greyish-white. Sometimes, depending on the mix, it is nearly brown.
We recycled a 950 palladium ring from a couple of generations ago into a new ring.
It works somewhat like platinum and we didn''t find that it was brittle. It will ding and displace like platinum does so we work-hardened it as we would platinum and the results were quite surprisingly good, considering we we using recycled material. Always up for a challenge.
