Hi all,

How does one know if their diamond has a painted or dug out girdle? Will it say on the diamond''s lab report? Or is there another way to know?

Could a stone be an AGS 0 ideal cut or a GIA excellent cut with a painted or dug out girdle? Thanks for the info!

Some interesting threads below.

Also GIA will penalize a diamond for what they consider to be excessive brillianteering yet do not take into account the face up appearance of the diamond, this is explained in the threads below. In some cases painting/ brillianteering can enhance desirable visual properties of a stone. However such diamonds will receive a VG rather than Excellent cut grade, normally a notation concerning this will appear in the comments section of the report.

An Idealscope image of the diamond is always very useful to see if a diamond has been painted and if so whether the effects of this are postive or negative concerning visual performance.

GIA will say if a stone is brillianteered if it deviates above a certain level and the cut grade drop, regardless of it's effect on the performance of the stone. AGS0 performance grading will not.

The only way to really know is to get a full sarin scan of the stone.

Stone, I did get a Sarin scan on my AGS 0 diamond. What should I look for on the Sarin?

You need compare girdle thickness in bezel and bone points. Classical diamond has same(+-0.1%) thickness in these points
also difference between max thickness and min( in valley points ) is 1.6-1.7%

IS or ASET image is the best way for a non-pro to tell if it has enough to affect anything.

All diamonds have some due to cutting variations.

Really ? I can not judge the painting influence by IS/ASET images only. may be because I am not " a non-pro"
