Hello all. I am so glad to have stumbled upon this site! My boyfriend of 3 years recently proposed and gave me a ring that has been in his family for 4 generations. The diamond has been re-set several times, the last time with a band that opens up to allow someone with arthritis to wear it. The ring is a size 4, and I wear a 5, so we decided to have it re-set once again so I won''t have to worry about the band popping open, and because I would prefer to have something more modern in design. The diamond itself is around 1 and a third to 1 and a half carats (we are having it appraised tomorrow to know for sure) round shape.

So now the real fun begins. I have looked at so many settings they are all starting to look the same! I really like tacori and ritani for their intricate design. I originally was drawn to halo designs with pave diamonds but then started to like engraved filigree designs. Anyway, we have been to several jewelry stores so I can try on different styles and so far the one that I actually like the most is a halo with pave diamonds in yellow gold with a matching band. The only catch is: where we found the setting was at a "mall" type of jewelry store that I did not expect to find anything I liked at. I know I probably sound like a total snob, but for the price it just seems like it''s too good to be true. We are certainly not rich and would love to get a fabulous deal, but I also don''t know if I should trust them to re-set a diamond that even if it''s not worth a ton, it has a lot of sentimental value. Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Get the ring added to your homeowners or renters home insurance policy, or get a separate insurance policy for the ring through Jewelers Mutual prior to setting it. Then you don''t have to worry as much about damage.

I would not trust my diamond to any old dealer either. I would keep looking until you find a *style* that you like, then find a dealer who is very reputable and get something similar from them.

Pearlman''s jewelers carries ritani etc and they have a great rep on PS. Check them out.
