Don't think too much.
Answer with your gut.
If you think too much you may get analysis paralysis and not be able to answer.

Each side has tried to make the terms con and lib dirty words.
Ignore that BS and just answer.

I doubt anyone is 100% so-called liberal or conservative on every issue, fiscal, social, etc.
... but I think all of us swing one way more than than the other ... and that's the way you should vote for this poll.

I intentionally gave only two poll choices, and no Other.

I think we may have polled this before but recent threads make me suspect it's time for an update.

If I were in the states I would lean towards being a liberal if anything. Or as they're better known here in Australia by the far-right, 'Communist lefty scum'.

If we get 100 or more voters then it will end up 68% liberals vs 32% for conservatives.

I am socially liberal (support gay marriage, a woman's right to choose, etc.), but fiscally conservative (support small government, balanced budget, etc.) so not sure where that puts me in your poll.

Yes the idea that there are only two jars is definitely flawed.
But the 2-jar thing remains the basis of the vast majority of discussion.

repeat ...

Yes same here. No way can I fit into the either/or category so cannot vote. Socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

This is a good point. Here is Canada "most" of our "right-wing tea party nutjobs" would be "communist lefty scum" by American standards. Bernie Sanders would probably be seen as a centrist here, from what I know of his policies. Only within the last 10 years have we seen the rise of anything approaching even the American moderate right-wing.

For context sake, I would still be liberal by American standards. Since Kenny made the thread I measured by an American yard stick.

This. I'm from the South of the US but live in Britain. Or as my father likes to say I "turned all socialist" on him.

It gets crazy here in Australia. Do you want to know what the people who are right wing and conservative call themselves?

Liberals :errrr:

At first I was beating myself up for not having a 'neither' option.
Perfect poll-writing is a bi!ch! :knockout:

But it's okay, because those who state they are neither are a wash.

There's a good (though now fairly old) book called, The Strange Death of Liberal England. It elucidates the fall of The Liberal Party and the rise of The Labour Party, which was far more left leaning, in England during the period between 1910 and 1914. It really is a fascinating book.

Liberal. But would say I am a mixture as I agree with Conservatives on about 25% of issues.

That's interesting because we have a 2-party system here in Australia and the names of the parties are Labour and Liberal. They also are left and right wing respectively, makes sense that the party system was copied since we're still a country under the commonwealth.

Although it's a 2 party system, there are many minor parties that will then give preferences to ine of the major 2 parties. There's some great names of political parties out there as well: Shooters and Fisher's party, Motor Enthusiasts party, The Australian Sex Party.

In Canada our parties are literally called Liberal and Conservative. Every once and a while a third party, the New Democrats whome I believe are extreme left will get enough votes to actually have influence. We also have minor parties like the Block Québécois who are basically a group who want to separate from the country, the Green Party who want to legalize pot, and the communist party.

I get confused with the whole Republican and Democrat thing. Much prefer just calling them Conservative and Liberal.

Yes I agree it is confusing and artificial to categorize/label people as either liberal vs conservative or democratic vs republican.

Personally my dh and I could not be more socially liberal (nor more financially conservative) so there are no labels that accurately apply IMO and that is why I am a registered independent politically speaking as I do not align with any political party.

I dislike labels in general.

In the UK our main parties are Labour and Conservative, although I saw a graphic lately which showed that our "Conservatives" are way to the left of B Obama. Was quite surprised!
