Saw an oval today that I really liked but wrong carat size. Question-a salesperson told me that an oval appears smaller than a round because they cut off more of the diamond and loose some of the weight. But isn''t a 2 carat a 2 carat? I would think that an oval may appear larger because of the length? Any imput greatly appreciated.

An oval of a given weight will genreally be longer yet narrower than a round of the same weight with the assumption they both have similar depth percentages. A deep stone always has less diameter than a less deep stone when weight is held constant.

Some people will prefer the appearance of greater size that an oval, pear or marquise gives compared to a smae weight, equally deep, round. Of course, some would prefer a round diamond.
