is there an ideal range for oval shaped diamonds when it comes to pavilion depth percentages? if I''m concerned with this measurement, am I being too nit-picky? thanks for any help you can provide.

Get ASET image for fancy cuts.

Hi dokmu! Hopefully the below will help some more. Forgive me if I am repeating myself from the other thread!

To try to answer your question, there are various proportion configurations which can result in a beautiful oval and the pavilion depth percentage is only a part of the story, although you can't judge these shapes by numbers you can use this chart as an initial screening tool. If you find an oval you love which doesn't quite match up thats fine as the numbers are meant to be used as a guide only.

Important measurements are;

depth%
table%
crown height% ( need Sarin or Helium scan to get this value).

When buying online images are essential, ideally you will have anASET image and detailed photographs to help you. Besides the quality of the light return which ASET will show, ovals can vary tremendously for shape, some are shorter and rounder, some longer and thinner so it is important to see images in order to see if the shape appeals to you.

You aren''t being too nit-picky, but the answer to your question is a tough one. The reason is that it depends on the width to length ratio of the stone as well as the crown angles. An ASET image is a good idea as is a set of pictures taken looking at the stone from different distances. You want to avoid having too large of a "bow-tie" in the stone and this will show up on either an ASET image or a picture taken from about 18" away or so. If you can hold the diamond in person, then look at it at from about the distance you would if it were mounted to get an idea of whether it appeals to you.
