Hi
I am currently shopping for an engagement ring, and I have come to realize that I love oval diamonds, halos, and bezel settings. I also enjoy east-west and north-south settings. However, I could really use some advice about carat size. From shopping around I have noticed that a halo and bezel setting tends to make the center stone look larger, but I am not sure what carat size to select. Due to the fact that I would like a higher quality stone, and given our budget the carat size could range between .80-1.25 depending on how the stone looks in the setting. The larger the carat we select though I might have to forgo the halo. I would appreciate any advice and pics! Thank and I am really looking forward to reading what people have to say !

90-1.05 carat in a halo or bezel is what I'd shoot for.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-I1-Ideal-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1493168.asp I normally wouldn't recommend an I clarity stone for a ring. BUT I would ask if this one is eyeclean and if any of the feather's breach the surface. If it is eyeclean and the feathers are safe ask for an ASET image of it (they will tell you to pick three, just do the one, you only get three total) and post the ASET. If you stick it in a bezel halo (which would be the safest way to set it) this one could be a steal, the spread is amazing and the bow tie looks minimal plus it's an E color and a 6 main oval.

HI everyone!
Thank you so much for all your advice.

Gypsy and Audball thank you so much for turning me on to James Allen. I really like his bezel set designs, but when I have shown these types of rings to my boyfriend in jewelry stores he often comments that he thinks they are too plain without the halo. However, I think they are gorgeous, modern, and timeless, but of course I want to choose a ring that we both will love. Gypsy thanks for the link to that amazing find of a diamond. I am just a little hesitant that it is an I, but I will follow up with getting the ASET image.

Nieseel thank you for your suggestion as well. I really enjoy the north south oval you recommended, and I have seen something similar on Ritani's website. Have you ever heard of them? Are they a reputable jeweler?

SOOOO I have a big question! After endless web searches I have found an almost spitting image of the ring that first sent me into this oval east-west love affair ... A few months ago while e-ring shopping with my boyfriend we ventured into a very reputable jewelry store in our area. We looked at a lot of rings, and then the sales person showed us an east-west oval diamond with a halo that someone had traded in in order to purchase a more expensive piece of jewelry. They wanted $7,000 for it, and my boyfriend asked if there was any wiggle room on the price if he payed cash. The jeweler only offered to take $100 off, and said "he didn't want to give it away". Which kind of signaled to us that he thought it was fairly priced, but we were just starting to learn about e-rings so we weren't sure.

Then this evening I came across a ring very similar online that coincidentally someone else had also traded in towards a more expensive purchase, but the listed price was $2500 ?!?! A few things are different, and I would like to know if you think these factors explain the price difference ...... the ring I was interested was platnium, .81 VS1 G color white diamond, and .50 carat of additional diamonds ... the one I just found online was 14 K white and yellow gold, .69 fancy yellow VS1 E color diamond, and .24 carat of additional diamonds. Here is the page for the similar ring I found.

Please let me know what you think. I really love this style of ring, and have been comparing it to everything else we look at. I have kind of hesitated with following through with selecting it, because its below a carat, and I just don't know if my boyfriend is getting his money's worth. Also how do jewelers know how many carats a stone is when they cannot weigh it since it is already set ... the sales woman said it was approx. .81, so that doesn't sound like she knows for certain, right?

Anyway so sorry if this post has made anyone cross eyed at this point  I could just use some advice. Thanks!

Haha I have heard of them! Im actually having my Pear set currently in a plain sank bezel halo similar to the oval I originally posted. Endless Love, i think used to be that syles name before they changed all there stuff around on there website a few weeks ago" If you search that word in this sites advanced search function you can find other peoples posts about it. Or if you just search ritani in general people have a lot of good things to say about it. I got mine for a local jeweler and the setting was under 2k for a 14K wg one.

My ring, ive been told :naughty: , should be in on the 8th, so I wont have pics till then, but here are some other ones on the site. Everything I read says they are very well made and sturdy. I think someone had used the word "tank" to describe them at one point on the site. But at the same point they are really delicate rings.

this one is kind of old, No the halos have more of an angled tilt to them

that sholdt ring i suggested is really nice too. Again, Ive heard good things about that company.

I think Pearlmans sells both of those brands, you could contact them for pricing.

To your other question, I think it just depends on a few things. Do you know your ring size? Because I think the size of your oval can be smaller if you have nice small fingers. If you have larger fingers like myself, a larger stone would probably be better. Also the bezel in that ring is very large. Personally I like a more subtle halo, but that personal preference. And then the color of the stone. Do you want a colored stone? Whites "match" everything, where as colored stones stand out more.

ETA: isnt that ring sold?

If it helps, my ering is an oval set east-west, with a half bezel. This is a 1ct stone.

Edited to add: for reference, dimensions: ~8mm x 6mm, on a 5.75 finger, shank is 3mm wide.

The jeweler didn't make it as requested though - thick shank, very chunky bezel so I am going to have it redone eventually. As someone said upthread, Sholdt is a great example of half bezels done right.
