Very very newbie here. I have an oval 1.86ct that I want evaluatedbefore I get it reset. After reading some of the tools and knowledge and other posts, I understand there is different equipment used to grade stones. Is one type better to use with an oval that another? Thank you.

yes, there is one tool that is better than all of the others. especially for fancy shapes like ovals. it''s your eyes. see as many stones as you can under different lighting conditions. bright jewelry store flood lights can make anything look good.

you want to see the diamonds in the conditions that you will be wearing them in and make a decision based on that.
best of luck!

Look for a minimal bowtie, lot''s of sparkle and flash, well proportioned length:width ratio. Also look for depths between 58% and 65% with a table in the 52% to 62% range. Try for a GIA cert. Your eye will be the ultimate test.

I find the IdealScope to be helpful in appraising fancy makes.

At a glance you can get an idea of the light return performance, light leakage, symmetry and contrast pattern of the diamond.

IdealScope photos on an appraisal go a long way towards documenting the diamond''s visual performance.
