Hi All, thank you anyone who takes the time to offer some advice and help. I am in the market for an engagement ring. She is rather particular with what she wants making it easier to narrow down the diamond. She wants:

Diamond Cut: Oval
Setting: Solitaire pave style with diamonds around as much of ring as possible with NO upward bridge and NO halo. Diamond set as low as possible. Basically a diamond set on top of a ring of 2mm?? diamonds (example image attached).
Diamond Size: As big as possible is her number one comment above color or clarity. Pretty standard I would guess.
Diamond Color/Clarity: When we looked at diamonds in the store she was a a little more sensitive to color but not that much. Clarity I do not think she is very sensitive to but I would say eye clean at the very least.
Diamond L/W: She likes longer more narrow diamonds so I was keeping l/w ratio 1.39+
Other Attributes: I have been using this guide for depth and table: https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/oval-cut-diamond

I have been looking at all sorts of rings ranging in all colors and clarities. At first I was keeping color in the F-H range and clarity in the Si1 Vs2 Vs1 range on BlueNile which was giving me an oval diamond in the 1.2 carat range at $7,000-$8,500. Then I realized if i dropped color a few notches I suddenly could get a 1.5-1.7 carat oval in the <$10,000 range on a few sites other then BlueNile.

I am at a crossroad with going 1.2 and a nicer diamond or a 1.5+ that gives up something in either color or clarity. I am leaning the 1.5+ side because of her number 1 request being size. After choosing to go 1.5+ I am focusing on clarity because that is important to me for some internal reason. I have since branched out from BlueNile realizing there are tons of other options including getting help from this forum. I can't sleep tonight because I found this forum and am so excited to talk with some knowledgeable unbiased people. Work tomorrow is going to be tough on such little sleep.

What are some diamonds you would consider with my budget? With her setting request I think I can get that setting in 14k white gold for around $1,000 leaving me $9,000 for the diamond. I think I found the perfect diamond tonight:

I never thought I would get an IF diamond in my budget or even consider one but giving up some color seems to have allowed it. Should I go with this diamond as it does not have perfect table or depth numbers? Should I go bigger and give up some in clarity as well? Is I color going to be too yellow? Should I give up clarity and increase color dropping me below 1.5 carats?

EDIT: Diamond is $8,810 and with my credit card giving me back 2% would be $8,633. I have it on hold.

Thank you tyty for the response. I looks like two of those diamonds are a little out of my budget but I am willing to reach if either was significantly better then the others. Si2 clarity really scares me and it feels weird paying 1k+ more for some of those diamonds over an IF. Of those 4 are there two others along with the original IF diamond I should ask for an ASET image?

The pricescope search I linked to in my first reply shows some other dealers with what looks like very competitive diamonds to the IF I listed in the OP. Should I consider any of those?

I love ovals too but I am not crazy about the one you posted because of the pronounce bowtie effect, at least to me. I had an elongated cushion that had a bowtie and it drove me crazy cause that was the only thing I saw when I look at the diamond. I much prefer the ones tyty333 recommended. They have very minimum bowtie effect.

Can't wait to see what you decide on... what an exciting time for you. :appl:

I just spent an hour on the phone with Garrett over at James Allen. Very nice guy and super helpful and patient. I showed him the search provided by tyty as well as looked at ovals in the 1.2 to 1.5 range that were I+ Si1+ and we choose these three to send to a gemologist to get ASET done. Any thoughts if we choose 3 good ones? Before I get back the ASET anyone leaning one way?

I took the IF 1.5 in the OP off hold and am no longer pursuing it do to the pronounced bowtie.

Of those posted, I like the E even though it has a small bow-tie... the G has dead spots on either side.

Thank you for the reply msop. I will post the ASET when I get them back but I think I agree with in terms of the E being the best of the three from my perspective as well. We will see what the gemologist says.

Anyone have any thoughts on the diamonds resulting from this search? Should I change my search restrictions?

I am ok with going with someone other then James Allen by the way. It looks like I have alot of options and I am not sure how to trim down the above search to a few alternatives to the 3 James Allen diamonds. Also should I even search more? I am not in a massive rush just want to get the ring done so I can work on the proposal date.

You need pictures.

I would just call GOG and ask them to source a nice oval for you, no bowtie, great performance. I wouldn't bother doing anything else.

It will be the best way to get what you want, honestly. GOG rocks for ovals. And they will provide you with ASET images and a video of the choices so you can ask us for help in chosing.

If I were shopping, even given the experience on these boards that I do... I would just cal GOG.

ASET IMAGES ARE IN - Please any analysis would be great.

Comments from guy at James Allen:

I am happy to tell you that the gemologist found all three diamonds to be very lively performers! They all possess a very good amount of brilliance (white light return), fire (dispersion of color) and sparkle that is well balanced and symmetrical. They are all also completely "eye clean". The main difference between them would be the color and the face up size. The 1.21 carat-E-VS2 (diamond 279331; $8,570) is the smallest; however it is whitest of the three, facing up a bright, icy white color. The 1.30 carat-G-VS1 (diamond 281402; $9,160) is the largest of the three and is a beautiful white color, just not as bright as the 1.21 carat. And the 1.25 carat-H-VS2 (diamond 307264; $6,070) appears the same size as the 1.30 carat (just a little longer and thinner); it does have the most warmth of the three face up. That being said, it is still a nice white color.

I know that we discussed her wanting a diamond that has a elongated shape (NOTE: Girlfriend has since eased up this request saying it is not important it looks long, just that is looks like an oval), which is why I feel that the 1.25 carat would be the perfect diamond. It will have the most finger coverage, still be "eye clean" and a nice white color, just like the other has no offensive bowtie; essentially exactly what you are looking for.

ASET inconclusive for these 3 or nothing stands out that should push me in any one direction?

I reached out to Good Old Gold. I have to decide in the next few days if I give up on these 3 diamonds and let GOG source me some or if I simply pick one of these 3 from James Allen and move forward. Some of the stones Good Old Gold are considering requesting for me are:

1.2 FSI1 $6850 (gia 1.39ratio)
1.2 FVS2 $7500 (gia 1.36ratio)
1.2 HSI1 $6200 (gia 1.39ratio)
1.3 GSI1 $7585 (gia 1.39ratio)

What would you do?
