I recently purchased a 2 carat oval diamond. I’m debating if I love it or not. In particular I’m worried about the bowtie affect and whether it’s too prominent or not...and the overall look. Any honest thoughts appreciated. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Almost every oval will have some amount of bowtie. It's mostly a matter of finding one with as small of one as possible, and to have it "balanced" out by the sparkle/movement of other facets. So from still pics it's hard to say if yours has an overly prominent bowtie or not.

I will say that if you are already debating whether you love it, that's not a good sign. Things that bug you about new jewelry usually only become worse/bother you more over time.

The only ovals with zero bowtie are from Distinctive Gems (elyque ovals, but I'm likely butchering the spelling). Have you looked at them? Videos of them might give you a sense of whether you prefer an oval like that vs the one you have.

This looks like an 8 main with the arrows going through the center? Is it an 8 main? You can find it on your GIA report (or just post an
image of your GIA report).

If so, that arrow is like an arrow on a round brilliant and will show up black under certain lighting conditions just like the arrows on a
MRB will show up black under certain lighting conditions.

Can you possibly order another to compare? Ovals are so beautiful but difficult to select. My oval has no bow tie at all, but I believe it has a different faceting pattern that is atypical. I will attach a photo. AE1696E3-C1EC-4A59-AC68-7298D5E818CA.jpegYour bow tie doesn’t look bad to me. I’ve seen far more prominent bow ties.

I think yours is a 4-main @Heidibrooke . Most of them do tend to show less of a bow-tie but they are a different look
compared to 6-main and 8-main ovals.

Edit...and by different, I dont mean good or bad...I just mean different. You can find beautiful ovals of 4 mains, 6 mains or 8 mains. They
are just hard to find. Yours is a beautiful 4 main!

Interesting, I never knew what the correct term was for my oval. Thank you! Attaching an image of the facet pattern. CB8D90EB-578F-4075-8187-C6549CFAC100.jpeg

That is very unusual @Heidibrooke ...I dont think I've ever seen one like that before. It has 4 mains but only goes
partway up the pavilion. I'm more used to seeing ones like this....

Sorry for the threadjack @RidgeT

Can you post your GIA report?

You have a half a bow hahahaha!
Round diamonds have 8 of those - it is only an issue if the bow stays there through a lot of orientation. That seems to disappear.
That is great!

I have an oval! The same one for 20+ years. It’s not so much those larger facets that form the bow tie, it’s how dead or lively they are (IMO). An oval is not a round... have fun with it in different lighting situations to really get to know it!
