Hi,
I''m fairly new here and have just received an e-ring! The stone we chose from BN was: http://www.bluenile.com/diamonds_details.asp?pid=LD00905789

I ran this through the HCA and came up with E/E/E/E with a score of 0.6-TIC. I obviously liked the spread -- but now I''m concerned about shallowness.

I received the ring on Friday - we had it done in the Platinum Trellis Setting. Before ordering, I was on the fence between this setting, the Platinum Tapered Cathedral Setting and just a classic 4 or 6 Prong Solitaire.

However, I''ve decided that I want to send it back for a different setting because although I absolutely love the Trellis look of the prongs, I think the sides come up too high -- they meet the basket near the top of the diamond - and from the top it looks almost like a 1/2-bezel setting. The setting is also lower than I was hoping...I want something that will lift it up higher.

If I change the setting to one that is more open on the sides, will this let more light in? Thus making for better light return?

After doing a lot of reading here, I''m also concerned about the fisheye effect...

Thoughts?

I''m working on getting pictures together to show what I mean..

hmm so above and beyond being worried about shallowness or fish eye, what do you visually think about your stone?

your stone is a little shallow, spready b,ut the numbers are nothing to sneeze at. the angles are nice too for that table and depth..and all the other information is spot on to suggest that this stone could be very beautiful in person. i highly doubt it'd be a fish-eye.

but in terms of visuals, it probably already has alot of white light return, maybe a tiny bit less fire? do you feel like it shows face up very white brilliant? do you feel like it performs well in all lighting situations?

in reality, a well cut stone should take light in the top, ping pongs it all around inside the diamond and shoots it back out the top. there shouldn't really be a different effect from light entering from the sides to do anything special, which is why people say that bezel setting a well-cut stone shouldn't make it perform any less or better because the light should enter from top and return out the top. leaky or non well cut stones would leak light out the sides rather than out the top, so you never see it, and maybe in some way light entering from the side there would make a difference.

however i do like to see more of the diamond just in general because i kind of feel like it DOES make a tiny difference. but i doubt you'll see much of a huge difference visually if the stone is well-cut regardless.

just some food for thought.
