Hello all,

This sure has been invaluable in my search for diamonds and I cannot thank you enough.

I recently came across a radiany cut stone with GIA cert. At the bottom of the certificate, it lists inscription and along with the GIA number is "Orig Rad 5407"

The stone was called in with a lot of others for me to look at, but was not marketer to me as an original Grossbard .I see another part with a similar description on the board, but never a consensus . Am I dealing with an original radiant from Grossbard? Would be a nice surprise in addition to the brilliant stone!

Very close but mine is inscripted with a letter before the set of 4 number in additional to Orig Rad. Then it's followed by the GIA#.

It’s possible that the company decided to skip the letter on the more recent stocks? Mine has an older GIA report.

Since I'm not getting the stone from RDC themselves, perhaps I'll give them a call . It's a lovely stone . certified in 2014, so fairly recently .

Yes. I was going to say that you could check with the company. Good luck with your search! Loving mine=)2

Thanks for your replies!

Are the standsrds for an original Grossbard radiant higher than "normal"?

Kinda a cool little feature if it turns out to be true!

Unfortunately RDC is no more. I don’t believe that the company that purchased the company from the Grossbard’s will continue with the brand.
A shame because they are (were) lovely

MJ Gross answered my call this morning and will be calling back with more info.

They were around in 2014, correct?

Rockdiamond, do you know if that inscription means it came from them???

Still no word .

Does anyone from MJ post here??

Meeting with an appraiser this weekend . Hoping he can shed some (returnable!) light!

Looking forward to your finding. Good luck!

I fondly remember talking to Mr. Grossbard many, many years ago. He was a delightful man and very helpful to me at that time. When I heard that he had perished in a hit and run accident it was a solid blow to my heart.

I believe that it was in the late 1970's that he developed the cut and I enjoyed speaking with him during the 80's. I sold many of his diamonds back then as they were much more fun than most emerald cuts. I do not think the style is nearly as popular now as it was back in the 80's and 90's.

Still, although I am known for my love of the top cut rounds, I am sorry to hear that his beautiful gem may no longer be produced.

Wink

Appraisal confirmed the inscription and was a bunch of fun to talk shop with all the info I've learned here.

Is anyone in contact with Mr Grossbard or anyone from the original company. Would love as much info as possible.

Thank you!

Yes- I am in touch.
Stan Grossbard has retired and with his wife- Dawn Zimmer- plan to work on social and environmental issues.
Ms Zimmer is currently the mayor of Hoboken NJ, she's not running again.
Very interesting family- and I too was devastated when Mr Henry Grossbard was killed while walking his dog about ten years ago. He was in his 70's at the time.
He developed the Original Radiant cut in 1977.
Subsequently, others copied the cut and Henry sued- he actually won, but the cost of the suit was more than the damages- so he put the cut into "open source" and many other variants were developed.
Due to this, and as many regular readers know, there are quite a few "doggies" out there......But till he retired, Stan was producing consistently well cut, beautiful radiant cuts.

@Rockdiamond I was only aware of the lawsuit side of the OR story. Learning the personal side of it today made me treasure and appreciate my OR even more. Thank you for sharing, David.

I am happy to have (hopefully) found an original radiant cut stone. I was hoping he, or someone close to him or the original company, could give some info on what they looked for when they cut their radiants vs the dogs like you speak of.

As well as the number associated with the inscription

Glad to assist!!
1) In all likelihood, you DO have an Original Radiant Cut.
If the GIA report mentions the inscription ( and you have verified it's there) ou can feel confident you have the real thing.
I have never heard of a case of anyone trying to "fake" one by adding an illegitimate laser inscription.
2) what makes an ORC so great? That will take years of (fighting) discussing principles of light performance, Leakage, etc.
Leakage- that's a biggie.
I know if I had a bucket that leaked, I'd be upset.
Diamonds need to "leak"......but you'll find a very vocal assembly telling you it's bad.

I gave up on that part....I will say that Stan was very very good at making sure the ORC stones were extremely attractive in real life.
SO I know you've got a winner:)
