I''m ordering a ACA diamond from WF and sending it off to an authorized verragio retailer to set the stone. Actually, the authorized retailer will then send my diamond to verragio (because they only accept packages from their retailers) to set. This way, I will still have verragio''s lifetime warranty.

Should I get the stone appraised before I send it off to get set? I contacted a PS appraiser and was quoted about $50 to appraise the diamond itself.

Should I also get it appraised with the setting after it is set? The same appraiser quoted $150 for this service.

I rather not spend the $200 if I don''t have to, but what do you guys think?

Thanks!

WF will probably send the appraisal letter from independent appraiser and receipt to you so that should be good enough as proof of value of stone. But the question is who assumes liability. Once the stone is delivered to the retailer WF is no longer responsible for it. Do you have anything in writing from the retailer saying that they will be responsible for your diamond once they receive it from WF in case it is damaged or lost? Depending on the value of your diamond and what kind of homeowner''s policy you have it may be covered by that, or can potentially add it to your policy but you would have to do that before WF sends it to the retailer. HTH.

What you could do is have the diamond appraised loose for the main inspection then once the stone is set, have the completed ring sent back to the appraiser so they can give the finished ring the once over and then give a suitable figure for insurance purposes.

Congrats on finding a stone! Care to share which one you chose?

WF said that their appraisal letter was very basic and does not include the appraised value.

I spoke to the retailer over the phone and they said their insurance will cover it after they receive the item. I will send it USPS insured w/ signature required. I have it in writing (in an email) that Verragio said they will be responsible for it once they recieve it.

I contacted my homeowners insurance and they offered a personal article policy that will cover the ring, just like JM''s. The add-on policy is a bit less expensive, but doesn''t cover loose diamonds.

Yea, this would be the safest method. I was just trying to figure out if I really should spend the extra money and have 2 appraisals done. On one hand, after spending so much on a ring, I want to make sure I got what I paid for... but on the other hand, I''ve already spent so much that I don''t want to spend more when I don''t have to. :)

Thanks! I went with a round stone from WF. It''s an ACA 1.721 H VS2. I was comparing it to a similar stone in G, but the gemologist said he couldn''t tell a difference with the naked eye and the sales rep said that the comparable G and VS1 stones weren''t worth it unless I just wanted the better specs on paper. I thought that was very honest of them to not push the other stones that were just more expensive. I had pics sent to me and couldn''t see a difference in color, but it''s also hard to evaluate on the monitor.

Thanks to everyone for helping me! I''ll update my original post after EVERYTHING is done. :)

i wouldnt bother with the appraisal. WF is more than trustworthy and its an addede step and expense

It came today and the appraisal letter actually does have an appraised value and verification report from an independent appraiser that they use.

Anyone else think it''s ok to skip the first inspection because I already have an appraisal report and just get one done after everything is completed.

I agree with Lorelei and thinks thats the most prudent and thorough way to go about it. I was in your position and gave serious thought to skipping the loose stone eval. I decided to do it and fork over a few bucks because 1) I wanted to make sure I got what I thought I was getting (verify the stone) 2) I wanted to see first hand-loose- what I was buying. I didn't want to find out after it was set that I didn't like it as much as I thought I did, or that the "E" I was paying for was much closer to an "F" than I wanted it to be (and that would have been harder to tell after it was set) and 3) Much like you, I was sending the stone to a designer to be set and by the time it would have reached me, it would have been too late to undue all I did and send the stone- much less the setting- back if I was not happy. A couple of hundred to back my play on several thousand seemed like a good move and I am glad I made it.
