I ordered an orange diamond with the certification(IGI) stating the color is intense yellowish orange. It came last night and the color looks like GOLD.

I have never seen a yellowish orange diamond so I don''t know what to expect. I was a little disappointed because I thought the orange color would be more prominent.

When I first looked at it, I thought the primary hue of the stone is yellow with the secondary either orange or brownish orange. I am not sure I can spot any brown in it but heck, orange is so close to brown and I am confused.

To summarize it, it looks golden. The color is very different from the fancy yellow and I don''t think it is as attractive.

I need some advice from people that have more experience with color diamond. Does yellowish orange diamond or orange yellow diamond look golden?

Confused and need help.

Is this stone a ''natural'' orange stone, or was it treated? I don''t have any issues with treated stones btw, but since it''s graded by IGI, I''m wondering if the stone is natural or not. And I agree, you must post pics..........

There is a photo in the parallel thread under Colored Stones.

This is a non-lab., informally graded natural stone I''m calling Orange-Yellow - does it look anything like this? The brown secondary is tricky, especially sometimes under different lighting conditions.

It is possible that IGI forgot the 'brownish' word in the color. But even if not, low saturation yellow/orange would not look quite like tangerine peel. More like ... gold.

As far as I can tell, to get the color of tangerine (dunno, some oragish citrus peel), it would take not only the right yellow-orange hue, but also lots of saturation. Since diamonds don't quite excel in that, perhaps this time it just wasn't enough. The most impressive such color I have seen were minute vivid orage/yellow stones. A pair of small marquises... As far as I remember you were looking for over 1 cts - well, that would be quite a feat for orange! Even with low clarity.

Or.. you could cut a little corner and find a 'fancy deep'. Fancy deep yellow looks like patinated gold. Fancy deep yellow-orange.. not far from THIS as much as my computer screen can tell.

Btw, the description 'golden diamond' sounds lovely. But hey... it is yours, not mine.

Since the topic is up... I hope you guys don't mind a little confession.

There is another orange thing that I believe diamonds do better than any other orange stone could - less brilliant gems show color better, but pastel color looks best on brilliant crystal... in theory. In practice, for color itself diamonds pale against less bright crystal, but light pastes are so much more wonderful on brilliant background! Dunno which is better in intense color, but for light orange, diamonds are the best thing. Now, where to find a 'fancy light orange' diamond? No idea, I have only ever seen one and that was a while back.

PS. browsing for those links, the cat turned THIS in. Ok, it isn't big... but what on Earth could correspond to such super-enthusiastic color description?

Hi Val- I totally agree with you about the light diamond colors. Speaking of light orange
this ring was one of my tops for awhile (I love the setting too), but with their poor return policy I couldn''t bring myself to order. If you go to the link, the ring looks great on the models hand- she also seems to have similar skin tone to me- still love this ring....

Aha! That''s cool

I don''t blame the photographer at Fay for showing the diamond brownish a bit. But... it isn''t just the return policy - there''s not lab report for what would have been a rare color.

I have a light peach shade in mind. Something warm, airy and imposible to photograph. In fact, the diamond that demonstrated ''light orange'' to me is in a public collection and I had the pleasant encounter while the jewelry was being evaluated and photographed for the company''s record. The guys did their best with the photos, but the orage color persisted looking dark and muddy through the camera. In person, the diamond could easily ''hide'' in an apple flower. Sigh...

Normally the first color quoted is the tonal quality. Anything coming after that is the hint. It sounds like you would prefer an intense orange yellow (maybe a pumpkin stone), as that would be orange with a hint of yellow.

Photos are difficult to judge, but these may serve to show some relative differences.

Here is intense orange yellow.

Here is intense yellowish orange (in this photo it appears gold, perhaps as you describe).

Here is an intense yellow orange with more of the orange tone present.
