Thank you for reading this! I need your advice...

I am in the process of building/designing a new wedding ring, and I'm not sure what to do with my old/existing one.

A little background:
My husband and I got married when we were 20 and 21, we have now been married for over 18 years. We designed my original e-ring with diamonds that were given to us from both sides of the family. The center stone is from my mom's side and is about .25 carats. The 6 side stones are from my husband's grandmother, and are about .15 carats each. (there were originally 5, but we purchased one more to make it even.) We always thought that "someday" we would recreate the ring and add a "diamond of our own".
(And as a side note, I haven't worn this ring in years because I lost a side stone years ago, and instead of fixing it, I ended up buying a plain platinum band to match my husbands, thinking that I was going to "redo" my wedding ring anyway.)

Fast forward... I have since fallen in love with a completely different style of ring, and we are designing one from the ground up. We just purshaced a 1.87ct AVC and it is going to be set in platinum, with a "nestled" halo, a partial split-shank, and some filigree on the basket/sides. I love a "vintage" look and sincerely hope this ring will be an heirloom someday.

I originally thought I would re-size my "old" ring, replace the missing stone, remove the wedding band that I never liked, and wear it as a right-hand ring that I would someday give to my daughter. So, I had all of that done, but it turns out the gold is "pitted" and weak and the shaft broke completely through right where it touches the bottom of my finger (on the palm side of my hand). So, I either need to re-shank it, or take it apart.
I have thought about using the stones to create a wedding band to go with my new ring, but I don't think I could use the center stone AND the side stones because they are different sizes. Probably just the side stones, and make it a 6-stone wedding band, that compliments the new e-ring, and that I could also wear alone if I don't want to wear the "big" one.

But then... what do I do with the .25 center stone that was from my mother??
I love the sentimental value of having diamonds from both sides of the family. And I know I would wear it more if it was part of my wedding ring set... But the stones are weird sizes.

I will post pictures of the old ring, and the new AVC stone.
I would love to hear any and all of your ideas!!

Thank you so much!

The center stone could be set in a pendant. That way you could still wear it and appreciate the sentimental value. You mentioned the appeal of vintage; there are a lot of vintage-y setting options for the pendant that would be lovely. I also like your idea of setting the side stones in a ring that you could wear with your "new" engagement ring or alone.

Re: Opinions Please... what to to with original wedding ring

Could you use all of the diamonds in a pendant? As a halo style? Or add a few smaller .05 ptrs between each of the current side stones so there are enough to circle the .25 centre stone? Or basically have the same design as the ring is now only " flattened out" to sit properly on your neck?

Or!!!! ....

A DBTY necklace!!! :appl:  :appl:

What is DBTY?? Sorry, I'm a newby! LOL

Re: Opinions Please... what to to with original wedding ring

I think that I would do a DBTY necklace and use the .25 as a larger center stone with the smaller stones set in milgrain bezels moving up the sides from the center.

oops I see it was already mentioned. Diamonds by the yard.

Re: Opinions Please... what to to with original wedding ring

Thanks Ladies!

Those are all good ideas...
I hadn't seen the DBTY necklaces before. Beautiful! I wonder if my little .15 diamonds would be big enough? That would be a nice way of keeping all the diamonds together in an "heirloom" piece that has stones from both sides of the family. I will definitely think about it...

However... I don't tend to wear a lot of necklaces. Especially really dainty ones. I usually wear big earrings and sometimes bracelets. And when I wear a necklace, its usually long, or chunky, or both. But... I've never HAD a diamond necklace... so who knows... :naughty:

I also like the idea of a wedding band that I could wear with or without the e-ring, and could possibly still pair with my current platinum band (it is thick and chunky, about 7mm wide). I wonder if the graduated stones would work, or if I should just take out the center stone for a pendant or maybe a pair of earrings someday?
I also mentioned to my hubby the idea of recutting the center stone so it would more closely match the others... but he said he thought that would be a waste.

I guess a single bezel pendant, right between my collar bones would be kind of pretty...

Update...

Been searching the forum and Google images for pictures of the DBTY necklaces... and I'm starting to LOVE that look. I have also seen it in a bracelet... hmmmm.... definitely a possibility...

I just need to decide if I want to use the stones for a wedding band...

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Oh... and as a side note...
I came across Brian Gavin's website and his work... now I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake choosing the jeweler I chose. Oh dear. BG's work is beautiful!! And of course I just made a $2500 deposit on my new wedding ring design YESTERDAY!!

Hopefully it will turn out great!!

BGD does do amazing work. :)) I was going to mention that I think your .15 would be a fine size, and they will look even larger when they are bezeled. If you prefer you could make a DBTY bracelet instead of a necklace, although I'm not sure that it would fit all of your stones, or they would have to be set quite close together. I can't wait to hear what you decide.

Hey - good idea Christina!! A DBTY bracelet with close set diamonds.... for a lady who prefers more 'POW" pieces, that might satisfy dougsgirl. It would sure sparkle like crazy with 6 bezel stones- they'd be about 1" or so apart... you could even put the centre stone in as well!
Wow - that would be SWEET!

I'm with ya!!! There is no such thing as too much sparkle! (well, perhaps, but I try not to imagine a world without sparkle....)

GLad you are liking the DBTY idea - a necklace may not give you the bling factor you prefer because the spacing would be farther apart, but on a bracelet, that would really be impressive. If you go for it - and BGD makes beautiful ones - confirm the mm of the chain they are using. I think it was Smith1940 who recently had 2 DBTY's made - 1 by BGD in rose gold and 1 by WF for sapphires. She learned there was a certain mm they normally used and I think opted for a different size. Worth looking into.

(thanks for your support on my other post... :halo: )

I don't know if you or your H would be into this, but it would also work for you to put the center stone from the old ring into a new men's ring for him. That would be kind of cool. You could incorporate the old smaller ones into the new design.

I have a DBTY custom created through Whiteflash that has 10 diamonds that are .15 each. Just thought I'd post a picture so you can see what that size diamond looks like in this style necklace.

Re: Opinions Please... what to to with original wedding ring

15 points is perfect for a diamonds by the yard necklace! Do you have any daughters? I saved my original diamond for one of my girls. If I had your ring, I'd make a pendant with the .25 stone like this (made for a .25 center stone):

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-pendants/halo-bezel-diamond-pendant-259.htm

or this

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-pendants/halo-prong-diamond-pendant-1749.htm

And I would make the DBY necklace with the 15 pointers and probably add a 7th stone. Two new necklaces from one ring! :appl:

I probably wouldn't make a wedding band out of the stones because I'd probably want ideal cut stones or AV stones for that.

Oh, and I LOVE the AVC that you chose!!!

Re: Opinions Please... what to to with original wedding ring

Hey Everyone...
I just want you to know that I sincerely appreciate ALL of your thoughts and suggestions!!
I now have been looking at bezel pendents, DBTY necklaces AND bracelets, and wedding bands as well.

Kitten35... I love the idea of using a "family stone" in a men's ring (share the love with my sons as well!) but my DH is SO not a "bling" guy. He has a plain platinum band and I don't think he would ever wear anything "fancier". But I will certainly mention the idea to him. Thank you for suggesting it!

Orbaya... Thank you for posting the picture of your DBTY!! It is so beautiful, delicate and sparkly! The .15 diamonds look great! I am seriously considering that option.

DiamondSeeker... I DO have a daughter.. as a matter of fact, she will be graduating from high school in 13 days!! Yikes! I love the idea of having something to pass down to her. And I also loved the pictures of the bezel solitaire with the halo! Beautiful! I probably wouldn't make 2 necklaces out of the diamonds, but if I decide to put the smaller stones in a wedding band... then I will definitely consider this bezel set solitaire for my .25 center stone. Love it!!

Or, like Christina suggested... I will put all 7 stones in a DBTY necklace or a bracelet, with the larger stone as the center one. I'm not sure if I like the necklace or bracelet idea better... either one would be beautiful!
I have REALLY small wrists and would probably have a 6.5 inch chain, with 7 diamonds. Definitely sparkly!!

Enerchi... thank you for suggesting that I look into the chain width... I wouldn't want one too fragile or I will break it for sure!! (And in regard to the other thread... I hope things will improve SOON! And thank you, too, for your encouraging words!)

You guys are great, and I will be sure to let you know what I decide. It will probably be several weeks though because I need to talk to my jeweler about the e-ring first, and if my stones would work in a wedding band, but the e-ring is just entering the CAD/wax phase so it could be a while before I know anything.

But thank you so much for your thoughts!!
