I am new to PS and extremely new to fine jewelry. My boyfriend proposed to me a week ago with a gold wedding band that has been in his family, so now we are in search of an engagement ring. Our budget is pretty low, and I have decided I'd like a sapphire stone in a yellow gold setting. I found this listing that caught my eye and was wondering if anyone can tell me what questions to ask the vendor.

-Vintage
-18K Yellow Gold (stamped 18K)
-Oval blue sapphire, ~1.50ct, 7.2mm x 6.5mm, small chip on girdle visible with magnification
-Encircled by 10 Round Brilliant Diamonds, ~0.50ct, I/VS1
-It's $200 over our budget at $1700

Thanks!!! :) :)

Ask if the stone is treated, and how: ask if there is a certificate proving the degree (AGL is the preferred lab for colored stones, I believe). Unless the stone is either completely untreated, or maaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe heat-only, though, for almost 2K I think you could do better. If you go over to the colored stones forum, you'll get a ton of suggestions. Do you want a vintage piece, specifically?
