Opinions on this OMC?

I'm considering buying an old miners cut diamond from an individual. I've seen some of these stones in vintage pieces while I've been shopping for a replacement e-ring (mine broke), and they really appeal to me. Bear in mind, my old e-ring was a 1.5 ct. princess I VS2 so I am used to an I color and never noticed it being "yellow."

The selling price is $5800, loose. The stone was originally in a wg setting when purchased by the seller, and she had it set in a platinum setting, but removed it from that when she decided to sell the stone. Thye pictures show it both in the original and the plat setting.

Are these stones prety sturdy if I have it mounted in a plat. mounting? I worry about cracking another diamond after whta happened to my princess.

I'm pretty nervous about buying online--the seller has exc. ebay feedback and has sold diamonds on another diamond forum, but still, you always worry.

What do y'all think of the stone? I will try to post pix and and the AIG report. And has anyone purchased a stone like this before? If I use Paypal/credit card to pay, is there any recourse if it is not what it's supposed to be? Thanks!!

I am not sure what 2A (the cut grade) means without the respective definition at hand, but the stone appears to have great symmetry for an OMC. And this is quite unusual good news.

These are just as hard as any other diamond - not worries from that part. The abuse this stone has already suffered being taken from one setting to another is way more than you can inflict by wearing it. Sounds safe to me

I do not know how accurate are AIG grades or anything, but the price makes this a safe purchase even if it was, say... K/SI1. And I bet you wuld notice at elast color if not obvious inclusions in that area. You may want to have it appraised on your own to check the grades, but there does not seem to be any way you would not do great with the lovely purchase.

Just my 0.2, of course.

I wander why the original setting got ditched... was it damaged ? This could be a rather old stone and antique rings are not throw-aways, IMO.

Is the 2a cut grade based on Dave Atlas's cut charts for OEC's, perhaps? If so, that's great.

I think that this is a very pretty stone, but then I'm biased. I have an OEC too. Mine is 2ct, I colour, SI2 clarity. I love it. I was looking at it yesterday evening and marvelling at how much colour comes off it, how it scintillates and how it really comes to life under evening lighting. (it is extraordinarily pretty in other lighting conditions too, of course!)

I think that people who haven't lived with an OEC are really missing out.

BTW, my OEC is set in white gold and it looks fine. Nor have I ever had a problem with its durability and it's not in its original setting either. I do like the way your diamond looked in the Royal crown setting.

Knew I forgot something...the appraisal--it was AIGR not AIG (neither of which I'm familiar with, I've only heard of GIA and EGL). That's where the info on the 2A came from.

The original setting has extreme damage to the prongs, from wear I guess? So the lady who is now selling it had it mounted in platinum. I'm thinking of seeing a jeweler in my area about having a setting made. I still have the plat. from my e-ing so maybe he could use that and design something cool for me.

Looks OK to me and the price he''s asking seems fair too. You could always send it to a good appraiser to ensure that you''re getting what it''s being represented. Be sure that the seller has a good return policy.

No... never heard of AIGR either - which means nothing ''cause I do not know other appraisal outlets either

What I can see from the report is that the diamond was inspected in setting - silly, ''cause it has been taken out of the old one and it could have been graded more accurately loose. It is nice that the seller did her share of due diligence to get an appraisal - more often this is not done than it is.

Given the price, this seems a fool-proof deal (the replacement cost would still be higher than the price, even with the specs way off).

Otherwise, everything is approximative on the AIGR cert: weight is estimated, color and clarity are given but any of the major labs would have given split grades (say, H-I, and VS1-VS2) when a diamond is inspected set.

Not sure how ''bad'' this post says. In my mind, no piece of paper can detract from an outstanding looking gem. And you sure have just that on your hands

The stone looks beautiful. Are Old Miners and European cuts the same?I thought there was a difference.

I have a ring with three beautiful old European cut stones and they are very bright and give off a lot of sparkle. They look different than the modern cuts but have a special look. Is there any chance you can get the old setting? They usually are very well made and unusual.
