Opinions on this Octavia Asscher

cygnet, I have stalked you over to this thread! I can't wait to see how this all pans out for you! Everything is just beautiful! :appl:

It's perfectly gorgeous! I especially love the way it looks with natural lighting, spectacular!

Looks pretty fantastic!!!

omg it's perfect!!!!!! :cheeky: :cheeky:

Now I am going to hold my breath until BF buys the rock. If he decides not to, I might be heartbroken. :(( Well, I mean, there are always other diamonds, but with Octavias, the pickings are pretty slim.

Send me some of that magical PS dust you guys are always talking about! Please! <3

If this scrumtrulescent rock is to be mine, I will definitely be taking it to a GTG!!!

Absolutely Stunning! I hope you get this stone. I have an EC and was admiring the sparkle while out driving today, but OMG the Octavia is off the charts    If you do choose it what type of setting will you get? I love how Kenny has his set in a tension setting. I would go very minimal as well. That stone speaks (heck it screams) for itself!

EDITED to add: By the way my EC is a K and looks very bright & white. I wear it next to my G-H EC band and the color isn't an issue. Just wanted to let you know in case you had any concerns about the color.

Yep, after seeing that video, my concerns about color were completely gone. I think it'll be perfect.

I love Kenny's tension setting as well, it's just fantastic. I don't plan on doing something like that, though. I love bezel settings, and greatly dislike prongs (well, on my own jewelry-- I like other people's prongs!), so I'm going to stick with my bezel plan. Here's the setting I plan on doing:

It won't expose the sides of the stone, but I think this is right for my style. It's elegant and impressive while still being kind of "quiet." I think the baguettes will complement the steps of the Octavia, and they'll be a nice foil to the huge sparkle and fire in the main stone. Plus, the overall setting will highlight the octagonal shape of the stone-- I think it's sad sometimes when the special shape of an asscher gets lost in the setting.

I was worried the setting was going to be too expensive (Gypsy estimated it was going to cost me $6500!) but I've sent out some requests for quotes and it looks like it won't break the bank after all. Yay!

I love the diamond and adore (covet!) the setting! Can't wait to see the finished product. I'm so glad the quotes have gotten more reasonable since Gypsy looking into this option.

You have to post pics when this ring is finished!!!! It is going to be stunning!

That setting is really gorgeous! It will be a perfect compliment to the octavia. Please keep this thread updated. Can't wait to see the finished ring!

Wow!

In the video Jonathan said, "This is the kind of diamond that gets noticed from across the room regardless of the size.
I can say from experience that is sooooooooo true!!!

One reason is at every angle, not just top-view, Octavia is a ball of fire, contrast and scintillation!

One analogy is stereo speakers.
Some speakers have one narrow sweet spot so you have to sit on-axis so the speaker is pointing right at you.
Others are better in that you can sit anywhere in the room and they still sound superb.
The Octavia is like that, but with light performance.

That is a great analogy, Kenny! I like it.

Ack, my jewelry store employee friend is apparently very concerned about us choosing this stone and I think he's going to try to convince my BF not to go for it. I hope he doesn't have his phone number. :(sad BF is great, but he believes that this guy knows more about diamonds than I do because he works in a jewelry store. I am not very happy about this.

Honey, get an independent appraiser lined up and tell him that you can go together and have the stone looked at. Make sure you send the appraiser IN ADVANCE information on the Octavia cut so that he understands its a proprietary cut.

ALTERNATELY, have the diamond taken to Greenlake (again send them the link to Octavia) and go in there together.

Also regarding your jewelry store friend, tell him to butt the heck out. He probably wants the sale for himself.

Tell your BF to trust you. It has a full return policy and this is an important purchase. A little back end confirmation might be all that is needed.

Thanks so much for this link, Gypsy. This will come in very handy, I really appreciate it.

Friend Guy thinks that buying a stone online means I'm not talking to "someone knowledgeable." I could not disagree more. I have really enjoyed chatting diamonds with him in the past, but I am prepared to lose a friend over this if he interferes and tries to screw me over on this (obviously friends are more important than rocks, but he's being a jerk about this and I agree that he probably just wants the sale). There is absolutely NO WAY I am willing to go to a B&M store and purchase a stone there. Either he wants the sale for himself or he thinks he is trying to protect me, but I feel that his involvement at this point is really misguided.

Head it off at the pass. Tell BF that you think the friend has sour grapes about losing the sale and plans to poison his mind. You are upset and angry. Then tell him you have plans to go to an appraiser with your BF, and that you know that he trusts you, and how much you appreciate that.

Then, anything the guys says will not take root.

I am not sure an appraiser is the best idea either with a cut they have never heard of or seen before. I mean, if I bought one I wouldn't see any reason to take it to an appraiser since you already can see it is an excellent performing stone.

The funny thing about the friend at the jewelry store is that GOG probably has a better diamond selection (of outstanding cut stones) than 95% of jewelry stores! I would be VERY afraid if my husband went and said he wanted to buy me a diamond locally! :errrr:

I'll ask BF what he thinks about seeing an appraiser, though you bring up a good point that I hadn't considered, diamondseeker. I'm thrilled with the performance I've seen from the diamond and I know that GOG isn't trying to trick me into buying a dud. Over the last year, I've done a lot of diamond research, and I have never heard anyone complain about GOG, ever. And even if he were to be disappointed with the diamond after receiving it, I know that we would lose nothing but the shipping fee to send the diamond back.

This is not "Bob's Online Diamond Emporium" we're shopping at!

Ugh. We're going to chat about it tonight... maybe I can convince him to buy it before Friend Guy gets to him. :|

Sweetie. It's about trust. He needs to trust you. It doesn't matter if the jeweler guy gets to him or not if he trusts you. That's all there is to it. It's your ring, he agreed that you would be the lead, you depended on that.

You are right, Gypsy :) He does trust me, it's just that I was afraid he might value the opinion of a "professional" more when it comes to a huge purchase like this. I can understand why he might second guess because most people hear ALL THE TIME "always buy a diamond in a store, NEVER buy a diamond online, it's a scam," and then to have that idea reinforced by someone in the diamond biz might make him think that maybe I'm the one that's been led astray, but....

it turns out he trusts me. :)

HE BOUGHT IT!!! He bought it this afternoon while I was still drooling over the video. :appl:

We are leaving town for Christmas so he has asked GOG not to ship us the stone until after the holidays. That might change depending on who we get to set it. I've already gotten one very reasonable quote from ERD, still waiting on responses from BGD and GLJW, and Jon said GOG might be able to do something for me too. So we'll see which one of those ends up being the best option. BF told me that his buddy recommended he go to Alvin Goldfarb in Bellevue, but I told him that for a project like this, it was really important that we go with a name I trust, and he respected that and said we'll go with one of the vendors I've contacted.

Does anyone know how much it costs to ship a stone? I'm just wondering if we should have it shipped here and then ship it out again to be set, or if we should have GOG ship it straight to whoever's doing the setting (if we end up having GLJW do the setting, we can just drive over though). I am already confident the diamond is beautiful, so I do not think it's necessary that I have it in person before it's set (if shipping costs are going to be high then I'd rather skip having it sent to the house), unless you guys think it's a better idea to have the diamond physically in my hand first. Normally I'd prefer to inspect it personally, but I feel that Jonathan is a source I can trust. If it helps to know, Jonathan said he'll be taking some macro shots of the diamond and sending them to me tomorrow.

Thoughts?

So excited! Hooray!

Hi,

What excitement, just in time for the holidays. I have no doubt boyfriend will love it.
