Hi all! I have been a longtime lurker on PS, but I've never had any diamonds to post about. :wink2:

My boyfriend and I have been in the process of finding a diamond for an engagement ring, and I've completely fallen in love with this Octavia: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9580/

Shape: Asscher
Carat Weight: 1.23ct
Color: J
Clarity: SI1
Optical Symmetry: Octavia
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Fluorescence: None
Width: 5.96mm
Length: 5.96mm
Depth: 4.56mm
Table Percentage: 35.60%
Depth Percentage: 76.50%

Jonathan at GOG is going to upload a video of the diamond for me on Tuesday, and if we like the way it looks, we're going to go ahead and get it.

What do you guys think of this stone? I like the specs and I like the proportions of the stone. Is there any reason why this might not be a good buy, anything I should consider? Or do you think we've picked a good one?

By the way, a million thanks to Kenny, whose posts and photos are what got me into Octavias in the first place! I never would have found out about this cut if it weren't for Kenny and PS. :appl:

BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Hi Gypsy! Yay, I'm glad you think it is beautiful!

I've been doing tons of research, so I think I've got this under control, but we've never actually bought a diamond before so I'm just trying to be extra sure before we purchase it.

It's funny that you commented here, Gypsy, because my setting inspiration came from one of your old threads! I'm dying to put it in a halo like this:

Hi Cygnet.
Glad you learned about Octavias.
Sometimes I feel like I was screaming my head off about them - but I just couldn't help myself. :lickout:
Our Octavia still blows my mind.
I think they put batteries in them. :sun:

Since it is a brand, every Octavia must meet the cut standards of the brand so I'm sure it will be a fireball!
All you have to do is decide on your color, clarity, and size comfort zones.

HI Kenny!

Your photos are so incredible. You made me NEED an Octavia.

I am pretty sure this stone is a winner, but a second opinion never hurts. I expect the light performance to be stunning (as you've said, the brand standards are high) and I'm more than happy with the size and clarity of it and I'm pretty sure I will be happy with a J.

The Octavia inventory seems pretty limited right now, so I was lucky that the only one in my preferred size range was one I liked, and in the right price range. My ring size is 7.25, so I wanted my stone to be larger than 1 carat as in my experience, smaller than that looks TOO small on my hand.

Yours is an H, right? Do you feel that there is any noticeable color at all? I'm the tiniest bit nervous about it being a J, but I am hoping that it'll be so dazzling that color won't be an issue. I've looked at J diamonds in jewelry stores and they seemed white enough to me, though Ks look extremely yellow to me, so hopefully this one is more of a high J than a low one. If we buy it and I don't love it in person, we'll probably just trade it up to GOG for a whiter Octavia when they have one available... but hopefully I love the J!

LOVE OCTAVIAS! You're going to post a million pictures of it when you get it, right??? And 6mm is a good size for an asscher.

Oh Octavia.... I want you but can't have you.

So I'm gonna leave vicariously through you, k? You gotta post lots and lots of pics. Kenny needs to post some new ones too cuz I've OD'd on all the old ones. I need more.

Thanks again. :wavey:
All asschers face up small compared to a round.
I believe Karl said the Octavia faces up similarly to a well-cut generic asscher.
There's lots of depth and weight visible in the side view compared to a round.
But I'm telling you the Octavia, and ours is a weight very similar to yours, is so optically active that it has huge presence.
We all read that well cut rounds look larger and brighter than poorly cut ones, and the Octavia proves that this is also true in the asscher shape.

Our Octavia is GIA H, and in soft even lighting when looking at a side view I can detect some faint color if I put it next to an F, but then we have it in a tension setting which offers a totally shameless and nude side view.
Looking top down, in any lighting conditions, I can detect no color.
In lighting that results in sparkle tons of fire comes out not only the top but also the side views.
Unlike many other well cut shapes you don't have to look straight down on an Octavia to get a dazzling light show.

I'm looking forward to your pics, and your reaction to the Octavia. :appl:

that looks like a lovely stone. can you post the video link once you have it?

You lucky duck! I really want one!!!

Thanks for the detailed response, Kenny. Your diamond DOES have huge presence. It's just gorgeous. Any new pictures? I'm pretty sure no one here could ever get sick of looking at that Octavia. Do you think you'll ever end up getting that 2.38? It's a beautiful stone... just a little, tiny bit (read: A LOT) out of my price range :twirl:

Video comes tomorrow! I'll be sure to post a link here! I'm so excited. Can't wait. I have been having dreams about visiting GOG. I am pretty sure this means I need to step away from the computer and quit thinking about diamonds... but it's so exciting!

I'm glad you have found a stone you love. Just as an FYI, one of the reasons I didn't end up with a baguette halo setting is that it was cost prohibitive. That setting, properly made will require custom cut baguettes and need to be a CAD piece. And the price of it is around 6,500 with prices these days.

So make sure you do your research before you commit to a stone for a setting that may not work out. Personally, I'd stick the 6,500 into getting a larger stone from the get go.

Yes, I remember reading your posts saying it was quite expensive. I'm going to take the design to a few local jewelers and shop around for quotes and see what they can come up with. If it ends up being too spendy, I'll probably put the stone in the Ritani endless love setting or a plain bezel setting. I'd be happy with any of those, but I just love the baguettes.

When I was looking for someone to make that setting. I ran across some of the worst custom jobs available. This is not a job for a local shop. This is only a job for a place that: Has worked with custom cut baguettes before. Has preferrably made this setting before. And has no issue tweaking and remaking the thing until it is perfect. And is a perfectionist and knows exactly what it takes to do this design right.

I was going o pick ERD. Now, my choices would be ERD or BGD.

Please read this: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/custom-jewelry-work-cad-and-cast-psa.175834/ I cannot tell you how many badly made, mismatched, misaligned baguette halos I saw in the 3 years I researched the setting.

My opinion on any Octavia Asscher is OMG they are just the BEST. Nice choice can't wait to see it set. Would love that 2.5c. (?) on GOG.

You are very blessed, indeed!

I am! I feel very lucky. My boyfriend is the best. About a year ago, he told me his plan was to give me a ring that was a complete surprise, but over the last few months, he's decided that's not such a great idea anymore. He's learned that I'm kind of fussy (I don't wear much jewelry, so the jewelry I commit to wearing needs to be just right!) and that diamonds are more complicated than he had been expecting.

So finally he said, "I don't know a thing about diamonds, and you're going to be looking at the ring way more than I ever will, so maybe you should pick it out instead."

I am more than okay with this plan. If he were picking it out, he definitely wouldn't have picked an Octavia. :)

This is refreshing to hear! Sometimes the guy is so stuck on picking out what HE likes that the poor girl's taste isn't considered!

The Octavia is beautiful and you will have a stone that few in the world have! :appl:

Well, I really liked the idea of him surprising me with something, but I am less confident that I would love the result. My e-ring will probably be the only jewelry I wear most days, so it has to be something I'll never tire of looking at. He doesn't care much for jewelry and our tastes don't really align-- so I was nervous that it'd either be something I didn't like, or he'd totally go overboard and overspend on quality we couldn't see and appreciate.

When I showed him the Octavia, he said it seemed really nice but he was shocked that I would consider a diamond with any imperfections. I tried to explain to him that all but the rarest diamonds have inclusions of some sort, but he seemed really surprised that anyone would be willing to buy a diamond that wasn't completely perfect. He was really nervous that this stone would be worthless because its clarity isn't IF. It took me a while to convince him otherwise. :)

I absolutely love it. Very stunning. Draws the eyes towards the center and I actually like this better than the typical Asscher Cut.

Well, I am happy the two of you are going about this as partners, working together. I think that's smart. You sound like you've really done your research and thought things through too, which is even better!! I know you are going to end up with a stunning ring!

Thanks Gypsy!!
Over the last year or so, diamonds have become my secret passion and I've learned so much from lurking on PS... it's my guilty pleasure. I almost always have a PS tab open on my browser. You guys are the best. :D

You should feel welcome to post more, then. Check out Hangout and chat with us. You A) love diamonds and B) have an awesome dog... so you are definitely a natural PSer!

Yay, I feel so welcomed! I definitely will. :D
Our puppy is the best. He is a 5 month old Shiba Inu. His name is Lord Grantham and he is very dignified.

Cute kitty :)

My niece just got a Shiba Inu. He's a cutie as well. They are good dogs. Thanks for the kittie compliments, she's a demon but I love her.

How exciting to be getting an Octavia Cygent! Can't wait to see what you think of the video. That cut is stunning

Aaaaaah! Turns out I won't be getting the video until tomorrow.

Chewing on my nails over here.

So excited!

At least New York is 3 hours ahead! The video might be ready when u wake up tomorrow!

Oooh, that would be nice, but I'm not expecting it to be up that early. I'm guessing he'll probably want to take it out in the sun so I can see it in natural light, which means he probably won't be doing it in the early morning. That's a good thing because I WANT to see it in the sun, but.... waiting is so hard!

Gorgeous stone!
