Hi everyone,

I've found this website incredibly helpful and would appreciate your opinions on the following stones I hope to use for an engagement ring:

Shape: Round
Carat weight: 1.77
Cut: Ideal
Color: D
Clarity: SI1
Certificate: GIA

Depth: 62.1%
Table: 57.0%
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Strong

and....

Shape: Round
Carat weight: 1.54
Cut: Hearts & Arrows Ideal
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Certificate: AGS

Depth: 61.9%
Table: 55.8%
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Girdle: Thin to slightly thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Negligible
Measurements: 7.38*7.41*4.58

Crown Angle: 34.6°
Crown %: 15.30
Pavilion Angle: 40.8°
Pavilion %: 43.10

For the first stone, I like how it's a D color with strong blue fluorescence, "blue-white" if you will. I'm waiting on the idealscope images and whether this stone is "eye-clean". I'm a little worried about whether a strong blue fluorescence is too much. The medium to slightly thick girdle is different from what i've seen but may be inconsequential. This stone was on JA, and was wondering is there a noticeable difference between their H&A cut compared to their ideal cuts. This got a 1.7 HCA score on the first stone and a 1.4 on the second stone, which I'm happy with. I really appreciate your help and opinions!

What are the numbers for the D SI1? If you have already requested for the idealscope image for that stone, you can safely post the link here as the stone is already on-hold for you.

What do you mean by too much for the fluor? You want a ''blue white'' and not the blue???

Their Ideal cuts are just based on table and depth, can still be bad, a case by case situation.

Hi Mysterodude and welcome!

Whether the strong blue fluorescence is too much depends on you, as long as it isn't having a negative effect on the diamond such as making it look cloudy ( rare but not unheard of, check to be sure), and you don't mind if the diamond shows a bluish glow in some lights then thats fine. The fluorescence can often provide a discount in such cases with colourless stones. Post the IS image when you get it plus the crown and pavilion angles and the diameter of the stone too then we can go from there.

The second looks promising, if you could post the Idealscope and hearts images that would be helpful please.

Also the girdles on each are absolutely fine, well within desirable range.

Thanks you guys.

For the first stone, the angles are:

Crown angle: 35.0
Pavilion angle: 40.8

The measurements are 7.69 - 7.76 x 4.80mm

I was reading the fluorescence tutorial and how it mentioned "blue-whites" were once highly desirable. I haven't seen diamonds with strong blue fluorescence in person before, so I can't say whether I prefer/don't mind the trait. I was afraid of the potential cloudy look from the strong fluorescence, but I presume that's with "very strong" fluorescence? What are your opinions on the inter-play of colorless gradings with strong fluorescence?

Look promising from the numbers.

There can be a small chance too with strong fluor, these are known as over-blues and will look hazy/oily in the sun. I have 2 very strong blue, not as good a color grade as your candidates but both do not have the look. I just like their characters, they can change their look in different lighting conditions, but that is personal preference.

Negative effects from SB are rare but it is always prudent to ask the vendor or a trusted expert to check this for you. Personally I love fluorescence in any colour grade, it depends on personal taste, to me fluorescence makes a diamond look a bit more '' plugged in'' so to speak.
