Opinions on this diamond engagement ring?

lOVE that first 3-stone setting! Your diamond would be stunning in that!!!

I agree! Love the 3-stone setting.

I think rhodium plating the setting will automatically make it look more modern. It is actually a rather lovely setting .. or at least re-use the side stones and have less metal.

The 3 stone is lovely as well.

The halo ... um ... I don't think I can post online what it brings to my mind. :halo:

This one has my vote.

I am in love with the last one you just posted (the third image)! I am not so sure about a halo though. I will find out and see... but the halo on that one does flatter it and it looks really nice.

What do you guys think of a setting such as this?

I think you could probably find a more elegant version of the last set you posted. That one looks bulky and inelegant, to my eye.

I think it looks unflattering to the marquise - very bulky. The first 3 stone with pear sidestones is elegant and very classy. BTW, are you getting the marquise checked out or still debating with the idea? Do you care about knowing the actual carat weight, colour and clarity?

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one!

What I would do if it were me and i was keeping the stone is send it to BGD and have them recut the stone( if the light return is lacking)Then I would have them set it in a three stone with pears ( because we can all agree that beautiful). Then cet the whole ring appeased. If you're going to keep it I would bother with the GIA report at this time. I would get it if you're selling.

And as for the halo on Readers ring is thin and beautiful. Much more refined than that cluster three stone one which seems gaudy. But to each his own

I think it is a bit bulky as well, and with the prongs sticking up like that on the side stones, keeps it kind of in an 80's style frame of mind.

To revamp the marquis as it is you might consider going with simple, sleek sidestones that taper in some way (someone mentioned pears). I always think this has a sleek Art Deco feel:

And if you really prefer the accent diamond shank like in your picture, you might consider looking for something with a cut down type of pave instead of prong setting to get rid of as much metal showing as you can and modernize the styling. Someplace like ID jewelry will surely have settings in this style with a changeable head and they can custom the melee size for different carat weights too:

The stone looks like a fine size on your fingers and in proportion to your hand, but I don't think the setting is very flattering. It seems counter-intuitive perhaps, but the wider shank and bulky channel setting like that may actually be making the stone seem smaller by swamping it a little so a thinner shank may help with the contrast in size versus shank on you. You have slender hands, so I'd play that up with something elegant and classic.

I think people have given you good honest opinions about what you need to do with this stone in the mean time. An appraisal does seem the best place to start whatever you decide to do in the long run, as you'd need a current appraisal when it comes in to your possession for insurance anyway, and if you're thinking of selling, appraisal seems like the best starting option before a GIA report too.

I actually like the setting it's currently in, though I do agree with Charmy that rhodium-plating it would make it look more modern. The next ones I like are the three-stone and then the east-west settings. Not a big fan of halos for marquise stones.
