I have been looking for the "best" square cushion, at least 2 carats, $16K budget. This is what one of the vendors came back with. Let me know your thoughts.

It does not have top light performance like an AVC does, but it is a very pretty shaped stone. It doesn't have a lot of red, especially in the center, which I'd prefer to see.

And with cushions, the diameter measurements are more important to look at than weight, because they will vary a lot due to depth and other factors.

Thanks. She just wants to be able to tell her friends she has a 2 carat diamond. If it were up to me, I would get something closer to 1.5 for my budget.

I understand your SO might want a certain size, but is it carat weight she wants, or face up size?
You might consider the spread of this stone and see if you can match the spread with a better performing stone within your budget.
I was truly surprised at the range in spread among cushions in that ct range.
Have you looked at AVCs?

From the picture it looks very bright and pretty. Have you seen the stone in person? What are the specs? If your GF likes it, then go for it!

AVC's are extremely expensive. Would be almost impossible to find one with that carat weight and 16k.

They can be expensive $/ct, cost will depend on color also.
they tend to face up larger than other cushions. There is/was one being sold through a PSr that might be worth checking out. under 2ct, but good dimensions. Just an option.

I think I saw this stone yesterday - assume this is ERD. It is beautiful and I would seriously consider it. A real sparkler and throws off nice fire. I was also able to compare this beside my AVC and I really liked the stone and its personality.

First hand experience from a knowledgeable PSer...cant ask for much better than that!

The faceting pattern and shape are very nice. Might not be quite as bright under the table but if its the same stone that
CharmyPoo saw then it sounds like a winner!

what are the dimensions?

I'm curious about the dimensions as well. Before becoming a PS member I didn't realize the role that cut played in both the diamonds performance and in it's face up size. It's easy to compare two diamond with the same carat weight side by side and see first hand how one looks substantially larger than another because of the cut alone. An old friend and I were looking at each others rings at lunch the other day, she has a 1.5ct and when we looked at the stones side by side, my 1.21 appeared larger than her 1.5. So, while she had the 1.5 that she always wanted, she was less than thrilled that it actually looked smaller than a well cut 1.2 and that it was out performed in performance as well. I think many people assume that all 2ct stones will be the same size, and are quite surprised to learn that isn't the case. I don't blame her for wanting a 2ct stone, but I would want to be sure that it looked like a 2ct stone. Of course it may not be an issue with this particular stone. I think it looks really pretty though and I love the shape.

The Gia Cert. was attached with my original post. If you are unable to open it, the dimensions are 7.20x7.11x5.02.

If this is the stone I saw, it looked bigger than my 1.7 ct AVC which is cut shallow.

Cut perspective, I think they are just about the same. Size is bigger, though. Are you getting an ASET?

Yes, I am getting an ASET.

If there is not a big difference between the two then I will go with the first since I like one of their settings.

The JA looks more "mushy" under the table based on the video. The diamond I saw in real life ... did not have this effect.

Honestly, if the first diamond has the right price - I would not hesitate purchasing it. I liked it a lot and if it was 3 or 4 years ago .. I may have bought it over my diamond. But to be fair, my husband likes my current diamond more.

I love the first stone you posted - the shape is beautiful. I also really like the faceting and the big culet. If it is from ERD they find some great cushions. I agree that I wouldn't want to pay the premium to buy an AVC either if I were on your budget - as you'd likely have to compromise on color and/or clarity to get to the size you want.

Also, Christina makes a great point that just because it is a 2 carat stone doesn't mean they all face up the same size (i.e. have the same mm measurements / dimensions). If you were comparing the dimensions are 7.20x7.11x5.02. stone to a round brilliant diamond, I believe this stone would look about the same size as a 1.4 or so carat round. If you want it to look the same size as a 2 carat round, the stone measurements should be closer to 8mm I think.

~7.5

Unless somebody really wants a cushion, I usually think round is the more cost effective choice. Also easier to shop for.

I think for some people it is not even about the size ... it's the mental factor of having it over 2 ct.

I want a 3ct but to be honest a 2ct looks plenty big. I still want a mental note 3 ct though.

Well put CharmyPoo. That is exactly what I'm dealing with.

Yes, you should definitely buy this stone...can't get a better recommendation. Go for it...she will love it!

The GIA cert. says it is a cushion modified brilliant, but the drawing of the facet pattern looks like a fat 8 main cushion brilliant to me.

It still has nice spread even for the 70% depth. Several of the AVC's are even deeper than 70%.

Thanks. He's telling me the only reason it's labeled Cushion Modified Brilliant is "because of the extra facet from underneath that was placed while being cut".

Opinions on this Cushion - Opinion on setting

I have chosen the first stone that I posted. The stone is from ERD so now I am trying to decide between two of their settings. She wants a micropave halo that "doesn't have too much going on". Let me know your thoughts on these two with the stone I selected. They basically look like the same ring.

And thanks to everyone that helped me with my stone selection. I have been at this for awhile now and I am glad to finally be over with it.

ADA has no pave diamonds on the edge of the donut and a surprise stone at 7 o'clock.
Grace has pave diamonds on the edge of the donut and no surprise stone.

Its your personal preference on these two items that counts the most not other people's opinions that should count.

Here is the ASET for the JA stone.

It looks pretty good!

I find diamond 1 has a better ASET and much better shape.
