It really looks like it''s considerably cheaper to buy diamonds online, but I really need to see it in person before forking over that much money. I am in the Washington, DC area, and luckily an online retailer is close to me and will let me purchase the diamond in person as opposed to the internet. Here are the quotes. What do you think (of the price and the diamonds)?

Both are GIA certified and laser inscribed :

1.03 F/VVS-2
5.78x5.76 mm
depth: 66
table:61
polish: excllent
symmetry: excellent
fluorescence: none
$5880.00

1.03 D/VS-1
5.83x5.79 mm
depth: 63.7
table: 61
polish: excellent
symmetry: excellent
fluorescence: none
$6040

I like the D/VS1 combination over the F/VVS2. No good reason, really.

I'd let my eyes be the final judge. The step-cutting in the pavillion is what makes an asscher an asscher. Pick the one with the most distinct look.

No reason to pick one over the other given the info available. They could still look quite different, due to cut details. Color and clarity? If you can see any difference, congratulations - as far as I know myself I couldn't for the life of me.

Obviously, it is great to see these in person. Maybe ask for one with about 55% table to compare shapes, even if the other specs do not tally? It would be long talk why is that... but the antiquated look of such pieces has some charm to consider.

Besides, there are ways to present diamonds online well enough to allow comparison with material pieces at hand - I would say.

Here are a couple of such "info stacks" :

1.19cts E-VS2 at NiceIce
