Opinions on these 2 Asschers from James Allen

Hello!
I located two asschers on the James Allen website that fall within my budget. I do realize that they aren''t perfect, but I''m not looking for perfect, I''m looking for a diamond that will look good on my finger!

I like the shape of the 1st one (more square), but it seems very black (or showing black) in the steps towards the middle. Again, I''m a newbie, so not sure if its just the way its cut or what''s behind it. The 2nd one seems to be cut a bit more narrow looking than I''ve seen most asschers. Obviously there is a pretty large price difference in the two, so they probably shouldn''t even be compared, but it would be helpful if people could chime in and let me know what they think of each individually.

both are actually pretty nice for a value SE/EC.
The are both actually squarish emerald cuts in my book rather than asschers.
The both have a keel culet rather than a pointed one.

As long as the second one isn''t an over blue the strong fluorescence is a real plus.
Id get more pictures of the second and have it checked for being over blue.
Considering what your looking for it would be worth having it sent too you for an in person inspection.
 
Can you find out the Crown Height on both?

What is a keel cutlet? Should it be a pointed one?

As for the blue flourescence on the 2nd, I suppose its hard to tell in pictures and I would need to see it to be able to gauge this. What type of additional pictures should I ask for?

The 2nd one does seem like a GREAT deal!
 
the culet forms a line rather than a point. - vs .
asschers have pointed(or ground down pointed) culets, EC have keels.
it actualy fits the stone well given the l/w.
 
In a perfectly square SEC the culet is naturally pointed if all the pavilion angles are the same on each step.
Some cuters will force the pointed culet on a off square SEC and some will leave it as a keel (EC).
It will naturally form a keel if the angles are all the same.
Depending on the l/w I think leaving it as a keel is better than fudging the angles or making a weird culet.
The keel works on the first 2...

I sent an e-mail to JamesAllen to see if they had this information. I now have seen this diamond listed on 4 sites, but JamesAllen is the only one that posted a picture of it.

What Crown Height should I be looking for? I''ve also noticed that the measurements on a 2.0 carat and this 1.78 are very similar, but the symmetry is better on the 1.78 (Fair vs. Very Good).
 
Simply from the photos (and not looking really at stats) I would say that I like the step cut better in the 2nd stone (1.7 something) -- has a little more fire I think and I like the windmill better. Though the more square shape of #1 does look nice as well . . .

Thanks, it seems like most people like #2, it seems to have the best stats on paper. I wish it was cut in the shape shape as #1, there''s something about #2 that makes it not seem as "asscher like" and more of an SEC (as strm pointed out). It looks like several dealers are listing this 1.78, I doubt it will be around for much longer and my boyfriend and I are still looking...we don''t want to jump into things too quickly. This past week alone, I''ve seen about 7 asschers pop up that are within my range.

Ohh...this is so nice! But, after speaking with my boyfriend tonight, I think we may have to re-evaluate our budget...he''s starting to add up all the #''s for a ring, setting, wedding and I think he was going to pass out! So, I''m going to lower my specficifications and going to try to find a diamond within the $8000 to $8600 range.

I''ll have to save your link! That asscher looks so pretty! We may have a few more dollars after tax day...

I''d call and ask ERD what type of discounts they might offer PSers. They had a discount a while back if you bought a custom setting from them too (no hardship) so, it may be worth the call to see if they can sell you the stone in your price range. I''d call. : )

At least 15%.

I personally love higher crowns..., 25% and higher..., but as Strmrdr mentioned on a few occasions..., they are extremely hard to find on the open market and would probably need to be special ordered.

agree and disagree kinda...
10%+ will work if its cut right but most of the best ones these days are in the 15%+ range.
agree 25% is kicken but not consistent with today''s market.
