Hi everyone,

I''m new to the forum and recently put a deposit on a diamond. I wanted your valuble opinions on the specs. Thanks in advance.

Jeweler claims its H&A

Thanks for your reply JulieN and outatouch0. but after checking it out on HCA and reading up on a few things, I''m having some big regrets and doubts. the deposit was very small and nothing was really set to stone (pun intended). my girlfriend''s mom has been working with him for 25 years and she strongly trusts him. Including a Tiffany style 6 prong platinum setting, I''m getting it for under $6700. Is the price i''m paying for reasonable? Or do you think i should spend a little more to find something better?

What is the GIA report number?

Thanks for your reply JulieN and outatouch0. but after checking it out on HCA and reading up on a few things, I'm having some big regrets and doubts. the deposit was very small and nothing was really set to stone (pun intended). my girlfriend's mom has been working with him for 25 years and she strongly trusts him. I would keep looking quite honestly, the pavilion angle is much too steep and can cause light leakage which you don't want, I very much doubt there is any redeeming factor which would mitigate the effects of that pavilion and especially as we won't have images to properly advise you, this diamond is risky. I doubt it is h&a also with those proportions.

Thank you all so so much for your valuable advice. I was very fortunate to get out of the deal. when i went to the jeweler today, i expressed my concerns to him. it was one of the worse experiences i''ve ever had in regards to making any kind of purchase. i asked him very detailed questions and he and his wife started arguing with me and laughing at me. they even told me to look at their GIA certificate on the wall (which belongs to their daughter). and that their daughter went to berkeley. i was like...so what! i went to berkeley too. You can''t fool me with that crap.

aside from their awful customer service, another big give away was when they expressed to me that the crown angle and pavilion angle have nothing to do with a diamonds light performance. the cut, depth, and table is what you look at. after talking to them today, i realized how outdated they are and how much more i know about diamonds than they do. the only reason i went to this guy was because my girlfriends parents trusted him for 25 years. and when i chose that diamond, i felt so pressured in picking something b/c my girlfriends parents took me to see this guy on their day off.

Tips for inexperienced individuals who are checking out brick&mortar places: don''t involve your future in-laws (if they aren''t up-to-date with the diamond world). if they recommend someone, go alone to talk to them. know how much the diamond you want is going for (you can find that out through this wonderful site). inform yourself enough that when you talk to the jeweler, you can identify red flags. and the most important thing; if they aren''t listening to you and your needs, look somewhere else.

Anyways, thanks to you guys, i was able to go back to him with more ammunition. i felt i needed to talk to him one on one without my girlfriend''s parents present. unfortunately, i found this site after i made a deal with him. But HCA was a great help JulieN and the link you gave outatouch. all you guys rock!

Good luck.

D-Rand,

I''m really glad you got out of it wallet intact! Salespeople laughing at you is a great way to ensure losing your business and that of anyone you tell

thanks for all your help in searching guys. i''m still fairly new to this forum and still hesitant about buying online. so i''m trying to read up on peoples experiences with whiteflash, GOG, JA, etc. they all received tremendous reps from the users here. but after what happened to me today, i feel like i need my mind to rest a bit before i dive into making another deposit. i''d like to read up a little bit more to help my mind ease up and get over that bad experience i had. would any of you care to share your experiences (worries, doubts, money transfering, dealing with online agents, shipping process, etc.). that would be a big plus for me right now as oppose to looking for another diamond at the moment. all i''m reading though is that they are pretty reputable, but haven''t been able to find someones personal experience in the process.

Definitly take your time and be patient - it WILL pay off in the end. Just keep reading, educating yourself and participating in the forums. When the right setting and diamond comes along at the right time you will likely "just know" it. Plus you will have fellow PS''ers to back you up!!!
As for experiences, the fourums are PACKED FULL OF THEM!!! Be sure to check out the "Show Me The Ring" forum. My experince can be found in the link there in my signature. I know reading such posts gave me quite a bit of HOPE when I needed it most

PS recommended vendors are recommended for a reason -- they offer excellent products and have excellent customer service. This includes no-questions-asked refund policys that range from 10 days to 30 days depending on the vendor. So there is no risk to your pocketbook. Many many newbies are scared about buying online, but once you do it you will never go back.

Vendors that have great PS reputations include:

Good Old Gold (GOG)
Whiteflash (WF)
James Allen (JA)
Brian Gavin Diamonds (BGD)

Do a search using these names and you will find thousands of happy customers. MORE importantly, when an unhappy customer pops up, which will always happen, their concerns are fixed and the problems solved quickly and almost always at some wort of cost to the vendor.

These companies have good reputations for a reason. They earned it!

I have made several major purchases from Whiteflash. 1 from Brian Gavin Diamonds. 1 from High Performance Diamonds. Everything went smoothly. I used wire transfer for the larger purchases and CC for the smaller ones. I visited Whiteflash''s office in Houston. Real people with lots of experience buying, selling and cutting diamonds and creating beautiful jewelry. The accolades these vendors receive on PS is well deserved. Lots of happy customers. Lots of hand-holding from the staff and owners if you need it (most of us do the first time around).

hey everyone. so after cramming most of the tutorial in my head the best i can these past few days, i''m really considering getting an ASET/IS kit. i''m actually meeting with a certified gemologist who has her own travel equipment (microscope, refractometer, etc.). she graduated from GIA in ''92 so her equipment predates the aset/IS. she''s gonna show me a few diamonds that are within the specs i requested. is her equipment sufficient enough for me to determine how well these diamonds perform? am i too crazy about this whole aset/IS thing? i know the real true test is an isee2 machine. but i don''t know anywhere in LA where i can take a diamond to get tested.

I know that GOG uses an Isee2 to select their diamonds and they also have the aset/IS images posted. but i''d like to see these diamonds in person to make a thorough comparison. i just can''t justify spending so much on these 2 scopes when i could be using that money toward a diamond.

You could spend $50 and buy an ASET scope, you don''t need to have an Idealscope too as ASET will show both leakage and light return.
