Opinions on my pick. 2.5 carats

I finally made a pick!!!!!!!!!!!!! It took me a while. lol. It''s a round 2.5 carat, SI1, I color, ideal/excellent cut, excellent polish and symytry. I bought it from my uncle, who''s obviously a jewler. I know nothing about diamonds and pricing. On pricescope, it says this type of diamand is $20,000 or so. I paid $13,800 with the band I want. The band has diamonds all around the entire thing and right under the main rock is an almost square cut circle with diamnods all around it. From the top view it makes the center rock look soooo much bigger. The diamond is GIA aproved as well. What do you guys think in general, and about what I paid????? I should have it in about a week and a half. It''s going to take time for my uncle to build the ring.

Congrats on your purchase! The diamond sounds lovely, we are all about the cut here so we enjoy crunching the numbers of each diamond and analysing the performance, but if you bought a diamond YOU found beautiful, then that is the main thing!

Pricing is hard to judge as so many variables, it sounds like you got a lot of diamond for your money!!! Did your uncle give you a special discount?

Hi again John!

It seems you got a very cheap price on this diamond...! It is the cut quality which gives a diamond it's beauty, so if you want to, go ahead and post the proportions, then we can let you know if the cut is good on the diamond. But it is up to you, if you like what you see and don't want to delve into the specifics of the cut too much, or if you want to make sure the diamond is well cut and if it turns out it isn't, then to perhaps consider changing the diamond.

We would be pleased to help you evaluate the cut if you would like us to, if so then we need the following info.

depth %
table %
crown angle
pavilion angle
girdle thickness
polish and symmetry grades
diameter measurements
fluorescence if applicable

Giving us color, clarity, and size info is not everything...cut is what really makes a diamond sparkle! And to me, a diamond that isn't cut well isn't a good buy at any price (unless it's a good candidate for a recut).

Can you post a copy of the GIA cert? The following info would be helpful: dimensions, depth, table, crown angle, pavilion angle,

And most importantly...pictures!

Congrats on your purchase - I just want to clarify that GIA does not ''approve'' stones. They do do grading reports. Perhaps what you meant is that it comes with a grading report from GIA?

I have to agree here, and I apologize, John, if this sounds like bad news to you.

You might have gotten a good deal, but you surely did not get a 2.50 Ct. GIA EX/EX/EX I-SI1, not even speaking about the setting with side-stones.

LOL! He would be a fantastic uncle indeed, but I am next on the adoption list if he is giving out sweet diamond gifts like that!!

But it would be interesting to find out more concerning the price of this ring.

I wondered the same thing. Add me to third in line behind Paul and Lorelei for adoption by a fabulous uncle!

I also wondered if it wasn''t actually a GIA grading report that it came with, but the comment that it had been "GIA approved" actually meant it had been seen by a someone who had done the GIA Graduate Gemologist program and had ''approved'' of it.

Another thought that occurred to me just now is that it might be a clarity enhanced stone at that price. How much do you trust your uncle?

Anyway, we''d all love to see the specs on the stone! It could turn out to be a fantastic buy from a generous family member, and the halo eternity setting sounds lovely.

Guys, I''m calling him now to get the other specs on it. I''m very curious as well. If it''s got good specs, then great. If it doesn''t, I probobly still wont care. It looks awesome to the eye, and I''m not a crazy diamond guy. The girl will never know how to read depth''s and percentages either. I "think" I''d rather get a bigger rock like this than go to less than half the size with something that can only be seen by a microscope. It definetly glitters nice when looking at it, and you guys better beleive I''ll keep you updated on this find. I very much value your thoughts, as I know most of you ARE big on diamonds!

Thats great John, if you could get the specs I listed above, and any other info then we will have a pretty good idea of how well this diamond is cut. L and Jstar have made good points, find out if it has a full GIA grading report, or if it is clarity enhanced.

this does seem somewhat suspect. you may have gotten the deal of the century via a generous family member and if so lucky you! however, unfortunately whether you or your girl care about specifics like cut quality and certification, or the possibility of being treated or filled, the stone may well not be worth even what you paid if this is an artifcially altered stone or of poor cut quality. there are very few deals in the diamond world. they largely exist through the second hand and estate market.

There are many possibilities, including that John''s Uncle may have aquired the stone as part of a trade in, estate, or other type of deal which put the stone into the inventory at a very low price.

If the GIA cert says that it is what it is, then it''s a good price!

Seems like you are set on buying this regardless of our opinion and I would hate to spoil it if it turns out to be not a good deal - which I doubt since this is a family member and one that you are, hopefully, on good terms with. But we are all intellectually curious and will try to restrain my comments to what comparable spec''d stones typically go for at the retail / online level and reserve any subjective judgments.

WOW..what a great deal on a fabulous ring! I don''t know why some people think that when you come across a deal like this, it smells "fishy", or simply too good to be true. If someone offered me a diamond (let alone a ring) at that price, no matter if it was second hand or an estate piece, I''d snap it up in a hearbeat. I guess unlike some people out there, if it sparkles like mad, has some size to it, and a hint or warmth..I''d wear it with pride!! (nobody needs to know where/how you acquired it, or at what cost)! I''m sure it''s fabulous!! Congrats!

Because unless the uncle is paying for half of it / eating 50% of the cost, it is too good to be true. For the most part, diamonds are commodities and so they cost what they cost so it hard to get a good "deal". Second, he hasnt said it was second hand/estate and thats why its 50% below market price. We have no idea.

girdle thickness is slighty thick
polish and symetry are both very good
measurments are 8.61 X 8.57 X 5.42
flourescence is none

I hope these stats are good. What do you guys think?

Facing up small for it''s carat weight--weight retention perhaps to get it to the price benchmark/2.5 weight..... HCA 4.6=good if price is your only criteria.
