I''m new to this forum and I''m looking for some advice on an emerald cut diamond for an engagement ring.

Cut - Emerald
Clarity - VS2
Color - E
Carat - 0.97
Flour - None
Polish/Symmetry - VG
Depth - 63.9
Table - 84
Measurements - 6.56 x 5.29 x 3.38
Certification - EGL

I''ve been quoted a price of $4,000 and the jeweler is throwing in a 950 Palladium cathedral setting for free. I''ve seen both the diamond and the setting but to an untrained eye, I''m a bit hesitant. The two items that concern me are the EGL cert and the high table. Is this diamond worth the price?

Thanks

Trust your gut which is already warning you. I would read the Pricescope Knowledge section on ideal or preferred cut specs for ECs. This sounds like a poorly cut stone: first EGL is a lax lab and the color and clarity grades are often 1 to to grades lower than they should be. second, the table is HUGE and I am picturing an upside down pytamid.

The table is huge which means this diamond is not well cut, plus as you are aware EGL are said to grade less strictly than GIA or AGS in some circumstances, read more here, I would keep looking personally.

With a table that huge, I’d move on. It is very likely that the stone is very flat, glassy and you aren’t going to get those nice flashes of fire. As for the EGL certification, there’s no need to run that fast from it as others might suggest. Depending on where it is from, it can be quite accurately graded. I would only trust EGL USA and no other, not EGL Israel, EGL Europe and the rest.

Thanks for all the responses. I agree that I should follow my gut instinct on this one. Due to the fact that I''m running out of time (would like to propose by Christmas) I''m quickly realizing that to find the exact diamond that I want, online jewelers may be the best option...and a lot of times the best price. I''ll further research that effort here on pricescope as I''m sure there is a post on this topic.
