Hi all,

I have finally started to organise an ering for my girlfriend after lurking around here, and have ordered the below and am now freaking out of course:
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...-color-vvs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3716865

From previous passing comments and conversations, I have gathered that she is about quality over quantity. She likes the other girls rings that are solitaires on thin bands etc, but more importantly she likes the diamonds that tick all the boxes quality wise that sparkle a lot. She has said she would rather one nice diamond than a more expensive setting with a cheaper diamond.

From lurking on here for a couple of months, I knew I could go to a J VS2 or similar and get more carats for my cashola, but obviously it isn't really what she wanted which is the most important thing to me.

With this in mind, I think the above diamond is a good compromise for my budget? There was some IGI certified in lieu of GIA that were IF instead of VVS2, but I preferred GIA from my research. Also at my budget, if I went for super ideal or signature cuts it was only getting a 0.7ct. From viewing images and using HCA, the above diamond actually looked better with an excellent cut anyway than most of the signature ones I viewed (0.9 on HCA) and go that extra 0.1ct. Also F seemed the best compromise where I couldn't distinguish a colour difference from D or E. Beyond that I noticed a faint yellow tinge even when zoomed out or when in shops having a look so seemed to be the sweet spot.

So, how did i do? Still time to change, but I think it is a good choice for quality and a decent carat size (5.5 finger, going on a 1.5mm band so should appear bigger when you factor this and the quality in).

It looks really nice

I think it is a very nice stone, although the symmetry is slightly off (I would want to see an IdealScope image to confirm light return) and it is slightly overpriced at $4,430 (but that is probably the result of the VVS clarity rating). There's a few other options at $4,000 that appear to have better internal symmetry:

(I personally like the G :)))

Are you looking for alternatives, or did you just want confirmation that your selection is OK?

I was trying to get opinions on whether it was a good buy considering that specs/quality was the main factor (as well as confirmation I guess), but I see what you mean now about the internal symmetry.

My girlfriend, whilst not a gemologist, really likes IF and D colour and all the jargon and holds it in high stead, so I was trying to balance it out. Those VS1 do look very nice though.

Cut (of which internal symmetry is a very important factor in light performance. Many people focus only on the external geometry (angles and percentages)) is the most important of the C's. Honestly, no-one would be able to tell the difference between a G/VS1 and a D/IF in a mounted solitaire under 1 carat. It's simply imperceptible. But a diamond with perfect (or close to perfect) symmetry (aka Hearts and Arrows) will produce much more fire and "sparkly-ness" than one with sub-par symmetry, which will definitely be noticeable. This is why so many on this site would rather have an H/SI1 super-ideal (like WhiteFlashes "A Cut Above" line) than a D/IF with an average cut.

I would ask for IdealScopes of these diamonds. My guess is that the IdealScope for the two I posted will look much better than your original selection, but I could be wrong. :)

Even without an IdealScope image, you can already begin to assess the internal symmetry just by looking closely at the pictures/video of the diamond. Does the diamond have well-defined internal arrows (the arrows on the table)? Are those arrows symmetrically spaced and approximately the same size? Is there a nice white circle in the center of the table? Do the internal arrows line up with the exterior arrows (arrows on the crown) and are the crown arrows well defined as well?

An IdealScope should always be used to confirm how a diamond will perform, but using the above selection criteria will get you 90% of the way to assessing whether the diamond is a keeper. ;)

Have requested the IdealScope of mine and that G you posted, so will see how we go!
Thanks for the advice.

This bad boy looks super symmetrical and nice to me now I have dropped a colour/clarity!

Both this one and the G VS1 I posted above look great (nearly identical actually). I would get the IdealScopes of both and use them as the deciding factor between the two (and whether the extra .02 carat is worth the extra $210 to you if the IdealScope images look nearly identical).

Post both of the IdealScope images in this thread once you receive them if you would like the input of the community. :)

.

This would be my choice - WWW ... a higher crown & small-ish table, bona fide colourless & VS2 (HCA1.8 )

2c

I tend toward D-E / SI

Pulled the trigger on the G I selected, should be shipped on the 23/2.

Now I just need to organise an actual proposal!

Hey @Broheimian have you got a setting for that beauty yet? Please share! We’d love to see hand shots once you propose too.

Excellent, glad you've finalized your decision! It will look great with the setting you selected. :)

Congrats on the ring selection. Good luck with the proposal!!

Please do come back to show off the ring.

(I love that you called her "the future mrs brohemian." )

This is going to be beautiful!

So I am expecting the ring to arrive today, and when checking on James Allen at my order, the diamond now says True Hearts? No complaints my end, but originally it was just an excellent cut.

I assume True Hearts is just something James Allen can assign to any diamond, at any point they wish if it meets their parameters? Seems odd to do it after the sale. You can tell it isnt the usual as most true hearts have the idealscope images with them, this one does not.

Either way, hooray for me. Plus the diamond was one of the best cut ones I found thanks to Tree Scientest.

Oooh broheme! So exciting!!! Please post 436 pics when it arrives :)

Gorgeous diamond and ring! I'm sure she's going to love it. :)

Beautiful!

Yay!

Beautiful! Please come back with hand shots!

Gorgeous! Good luck and Congratulations and please return and share photos of this beautiful ring on your FI!

Gorgeous!!

Great choice!

She said yes! As requested here is the ring on her finger.
I was a bit worried about how small it may look, but forgot im twice the size of her so the diamond looks quite big and great on her little hands.
Most terrifying part was asking her Dad for permission, we had a round of golf and although I knew he would say yes also, there is just no natural conversation progression to do it.

Congrats!!!! It looks beautiful on her! :appl:

Congratulations on your engagement! The ring looks stunning on her hand. Just read through your search and kudos to you for finding that hidden True Hearts gem too!
