Opinions: Cushion or Asscher

Hi,

I recently found this website and think it is absolutely wonderful. I have been dating my boyfriend for almost three years and we have had several talks indicating that he is starting to (maybe thinking about, possibly going down the road of thinking about) think about engagement. There have been some drunken conversations to the effect of, tell Lisa (his best friend''s wife, our good friend) what you want, and she has asked me to tell her what I want. I originally told her that I want an Asscher with pave, but I am wondering if I was too hasty. I think unless the setting is just right, pave can take away from an Asscher stone, especially when put with a pave wedding band (I am matchy matchy). Also, I always used to be in love with the Tiffany novo setting, cushion cut on pave.

So I guess my question is, what does everyone think about cushion cut/pave versus Asscher on a simpler band? I am in love with Asschers but worry a little about the lack of sparkle and the fact that they often look smaller than other cuts. I would guesstimate that a reasonable carat range would be 1.5-2 but of course have no real reason to have any expectation.

Just looking for some opinions! I have very classic taste. Thanks in advance.
 
my favorite is of course the asscher :}
It is a personal decision that only you can make.
If you point him to PS I will be glad to help him find and asscher that will make your heart leap :}
 
Thanks! Maybe I could mention it to his friend. Do you think around the 2 carat range or a little below, asschers look comparatively smaller? I''m not super concerned about size, but I do think Asschers that are smaller can be overpowered by the setting sometimes...but I have always hated plain bands. Do you have a favorite setting given your experience with asschers?

That is beautiful, thanks for posting! My concern is that with a wedding band, the stone would get lost. I guess I should look more in person. Picking a ring is tough! Asschers seem so beautiful and unique -- although cushions seem so much bigger than they are, which is tempting!
 
asschers (a beautiful true asscher is really incomparable) are the worst for size..........they are by nature necessarily deeper and thus face up smaller. however i would rather a stunning mounting for an 1.5 carat asscher than a bigger looking cushion
 
A stone with an identity crisis, eh giraffecushion? It looks interesting nonetheless..one of a kind.

Asscher or cushion? I LOVE both! If I have the budget to go with a 1.5-2 carat Asscher, I don''t think it will get overwhelmed by a thin pave, even with a matching band. There is a link on Asschers and stepcuts somewhere here, some with pave bands/WBs. Best you have a closer look to see if it suits your tatste.
 
I think asschers look great with a pave band or shared prong like storm posted. I dont really like them as much with a halo though...just personal
taste. I do like cushions with halos though.

If I were to get one it would have to be a cushion. (but I wouldnt so no to an asscher!)
 
I love the ring that strmdr has posted up.. absolutely stunning... two very different personality of diamond choices.
 
The new GOG cushion would be my choice hands down.

Agreed. I love the "softer" lines/shape of a cushion.

Thanks for the opinions! I know its a great dilemma to have but I wish I could be more decisive. They are both so beautiful! I have always loved a sparkly ring but the asscher seems so classic. I keep going back and forth!
 
An asscher and cushion are so different in outline, sparkle and facet pattern. It''s like asking do you prefer an apple or an orange (or some other similar cliche

Ditto. You can''t have both so pick the one you love... I know, it''s hard...

Make sure you go and look at both cuts in person a few times. My girlfriend was convinced she wanted an asscher cut until she actually went and saw some at the jewelry stores.

She didn''t want a diamond that was TOO brilliant and thought she''d want an asscher. But after seeing them in person, she realized she wanted SOME "sparkliness" and preferred the cushion over the asscher.

The best way is to shop around, try as many rings (shapes + styles) as possible, compare and see yourself what''s better on your finger. You could then purchase your stone/ring at reputable vendor/designer here. Btw, I love Asscher very much and used to dream to get one for myself. However after shopping around, I realised they do not suit my finger (I still love their look though).

Yes, try some in person because you need to see how the shapes look on your hands.

For me, I would chose a cushion stone because I like the look better and the shape looks better on my hands.
 
I''ve owned both a cushion and recently, an asscher. For me, the asscher won my heart, hands down (and I''ve had sort of a revolving door of personal pieces until now, just trying to find my "it" ring). It''s a very unique cut that I don''t see in the real world (among friends, etc.) It takes a lot of time and searching to find the perfect one, which made it all the more rewarding for me (thrill of the hunt, you know).

That being said, they are both very different from each other and it''s impossible to really judge them unless you are able to see well cut examples of each in person. It might also help to research on PS as I recall there are some threads about the downsides to the two cuts - perhaps reading not just the positive aspects of each, but rather the negatives, might also help you in your decision.

Both are beautiful cuts and you will end up with a FAB ring either way!
 
I think you all are probably right...looking a bit more will help. I work a few blocks from the diamond district in New York City, so I guess I have no real excuse. :) I fell in love with the Asscher cut unexpectedly while trying one on when I was looking with girlfriends -- I had never seen one before -- but I only tried on a 2+ carat from cartier so I guess I need to be more realistic and look at a few more and put some more cushions on my hand as well.

Simple advice but very helpful! Come to think of it, I know a lot of people I know changed their minds about what they wanted after trying on different cuts. Hopefully that will make it more clear.
