Just thought it would be cool to hear/see what people thought about different diamond shapes and which settings they look best in for rings!!!! Show pictures if possible. Here''s the list!!
Round - classic yellow gold 6 prong - or bezel - gemstone sides 3 stone.
Cushion - yellow gold 4 prong with half moon sides
Emerald - thin band , claw prongs
Princess - 90 degree turned bezel with gemstone sides.
Heart - bezel with ruby sides
Pear - thin band with a point protecting head
Marquise - side ways bezel

Round
... can't think of any...
Cushion
... some sort of good old classic: claw set rather than bezel.
Emerald
... even a string would do! Otherwise, tension, light bezel, with or w/o step cut sides involved. Long rectangular stones are nicer to me than squares. That they 'work' allot better on my hand must help wit that preference.
Princess
... dunno...
Heart
... most are interesting. The nicest I have came across was a by-pass setting with a larger heart shape and a relatively smaller companion.
Pear
... set off-center to emphasize the 'water drop' likeness of the shape, be it claw, bezel or gypsy settings. These are meant to swing from pendants and earrings IMO, if any diamond shape is.
Marquise
... set across or at an angle on the finger. Straight the thin ones I like seem to get lost. The 'loop' setting on the 'Pick your style' poll is a good example of the species.
Unless they get some long sides - and for side-stones, half moon or traps are my favorite for a marq, which is not a common choice. I might have seen one or two and none in person - only played with some stones from my jeweler's stash to 'test' the marq & trap theory![]()
Radiant, oval...
Not sure. I can't say these inspire a setting style. The nicest oval settings I have seen and tried on involve half moon sides - the nicest is a heavy bezel with the center stone set sideways: unfortunately, I have not touched it ... it is a simple tantalizing pictures among the modern rings at Art of Platinum. An eternity band of ovals set sideways comes a close second, and that surely looks great on hand! Radiants just mean color to me thanks to the amount of light yellow ones I get to see, and because this cut seems to serve the typically light diamond colors so well.
Everything else?
If you wander what else, well - the one-off fancy shapes. They hold some special fascination just because they are unusual. Some are very nice! I usually fall badly for step cut and variations of it. Anything with few facets. At the extreme, the Context cut may be my No1 way to treat a diamond.Large baguettes come 2nd. I confess of being fascinated by the technicals of the H&A ideals etc. But deep down, the shapes that remind of the crystals they came from, not just its physical properties feel warmer.![]()
Well, for what it matters. The choices really are heavily dependant on what shapes I like regardless and that is bound to be something step cut![]()
Pictures coming... given a bit of time. Wanted to do this for ages. Hope you guys don't mind.
Emerald- solitaire or with tapered baguettes. 3 stones are nice too.
Princess- solitaire, trillions, or pave-band.
Heart- solitaire
Pear- with pear side stones, or tapered baguettes
