Hi,

I''m getting close to buying an emerald cut diamond for my gal!

I received these pictures, but I am a novice when it comes to buying diamonds much less evaluating these images.

So I thought I would ask the experts on this board for your help.

The specs are as follows:

2.04 E VS1 Polish VG Symmetry VG Depth 64.4% Table 63% Culet None Girdle Slightly Thick

Of course, now I have to post the images, so here goes.

Thanks for your help and time!

Here''s the idealscope image.

I don''t know what they call this image.

Others may not like it, as it''s got that drop center... but I do! I''d be very happy with that EC.

This is Sarin report.

Hi Gypsy,

What''s a drop center and why might some people not like it?

The cut looks nice -- patterns & contrast etc. Personally, I like a fatter emerald cut ... this one is so long & skinny that I''m not sure it would look right as an e-ring. Sidestones might help though. Were you thinking solitare ring or a three-stone type side-stones ring?

Hi Deco,

The setting will have two baguette diamonds. One on each side.

Proportion is key. A stone this long might look *better* with step-cut trapazoids. Similar look to baguettes (linear, clean) but beefier where they meet the center stone, tapering gently to the sides of the finger.

If you''re set on using small baquettes for sidestones, I think a *fatter* emerald cut would make a better overall ring.

Check out the pictures of similar settings on Harry Winston & notice the proportions of the center to the sides. Or Leon Mege''s fine site with jaw-dropping rings. It''ll give you a good sense of how "the masters" pair centerstones w/ sidestones.

All just my opinion!

I was looking for a picture to show you what I meant about traps & I found this ring FOR SALE at Leon Mege ...

It''s a bit larger & I have no idea how much it is ... but it''s DONE. HA!

Deco you bad girl! What a stunning ring and Leon''s work is unbelievably gorgeous...

I think it looks great, and the proportions of the emerald cut, along with thin baguettes, will look very elegant!

Oh Yeah. That''s exactly how to set that. If it were fatter... I''d say east west with traps from Leon. But with a long one like that... Deco''s got the perfect setting for it.

The pictures are beautiful. EC''s are so subtle and classy. Choosing a length to width ratio on a fancy cut is always about personal preference. The shorter the ratio the more weight the diamond hides. I have an HVS2 EC 2.37 which is considered fat. Here is the picture of mine. You will have to scroll down to see it.

Sorry that they are not v good pictures but hopefully you will see the difference in the length of facets.

Many times I have found myself lost inside the internal facets and admiring the different colored light it gave off. But alas I''m a sparkle girl and just need that blast and am now thinking about selling it.

NOOOO! You cannot sell that stunning emerald cut stone...I love your pear but am partial to emerald cuts!

I have no idea what a "good" ec looks like. However, my eyes are really diggin this one! That setting from leon is to die for!!!

I think that EC looks really good. The symmetry is even, the steps are aligned and clear, the numbers are great. The IScope and ASET are pretty too. I would not hesitate to buy it for myself if I had the funds.

What's the opinion of the vendor? Are you having an appraiser look at it first?

As the others have mentioned, this is a long and lean EC with a ratio of 1.62. Some will like it and some won't.
You can play with the emerald chart to see its outline here:

For such a long EC, I would not do baguettes, it will look even skinnier. Trapezoids will "even out" its skinniness as evidenced in the Leon Mege picture posted earlier.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I appreciate the feedback.
