Opinion on this unheated deep red natural ruby and price

Late to the chat.
Does the Thai ruby have fluorescence?
I do like the colour and a round cut is certainly less common.
Most rubies are cut to maximise size as colour and glow are important.

It has arrived, I will take more videos tomorrow. But it looks even better than expected!

Round cut is extremely uncommon. I'm paying a premium to get a round ruby actually. Cushion / oval are offered at even lower prices

Awesome! Hope you show many!
No fluor so it doesn’t pop pink and a lower level of scintillation are fair tradeoffs imo when on a budget. Everyone differs tho!

Yes, it means it has fluorescence. Take it out in the sun when you can. If the fluorescence is strong enough, you'll see it light up.

Hi @Crimson and @Autumn in New England!

I managed to find the email containing a link to that ruby!

It was around 1.7 carats, unheated, Burmese, eye clean, crystalline, and pinkish red (not pigeon's blood red), with strong flourescence.

When I asked, I sure wasn't expecting it to be 55k USD! :eek-2:But knowing the vendor, I'm sure it's one spectacularly glowy gem!

I'm honestly just terrible at judging gemstones based on videos, but does that midle section look like a window or anything like that? It seems a little less saturated than the rest of the ruby, but I'm not sure if that's just normal. I haven't really looked into rubies much...

And congratulations on your new ruby @Crimson! You have amazing taste in gemstones so I'm sure it's incredible - have you posted any pictures here by any chance? :kiss2:

Ooh thank you @Bookwyrm I do like this kind of pinkish red. :mrgreen2:You are right - there is something about the centre. I see a tinge of blue. I wonder whether it is a Mong Hsu stone. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were because Mogok stones are almost impossible to find nowadays.
I haven't yet posted any photos of my new ruby jewellery. :kiss2:Will do so later,

I can't wait to see your new ruby jewellery!! Knowing your taste and expertise, I'm sure it's going to be just spectacular! :kiss2:

I think pinkish reds are my favourite type of ruby - I haven't seen many, but the pinkish reds I've seen in person generally seem brighter and more glowy compared to the pure reds. I don't know enough about rubies to know the difference between Mong Hsu and Mogok, but I did quickly look up unheated Mogok ruby...and whew...these pricetags! :eek2: Do they really look THAT good in person to justify that?

The vibrance and clarity are phenomenal! There is some windowing, as you mentioned, but with untreated Burmese material this fine, it is often forgiven. This location is also famous for more pink-leaning stones. I bet he fluoresces like mad. o_O

Finally sealed the deal at a total of $2950, all tax/shipping/etc included.

6.10 x 6.14 x 3.14mm, 0.96ct, deep red, unheated, Thailand (Chanthaburi region). I changed info a tiny bit in the post just in case it get poached.

It's darker than what I expected from the videos. But even my own phone camera make it brighter (more vivid red) than its actual color, so I can't blame the store. The lab is right for labeling it as deep red.

In bright lighting, it's very stereotypical ruby red: zero secondary shade (no pink/purple/pigeon blood spots), just pure red.

Its inclusions aren't visible with naked eyes. Well, my eyes at least. The color is so deep red that it covers practically all inclusions.

I will keep searching for a bright vivid red ruby that is moderately priced :D

I still think the color is quite nice! It's probably the window making it appear darker too. Congrats on your purchase!!

If you plan on looking for another ruby, I would advise to return it and save a lot of money. A bright vivid red ruby will cost a lot more than 3k ;)

Yes I know. The ones I found are 10k / 75k / 400k per carat. But one can dream

Nice, what vendor did you use?

Nice, what vendor did you use?

I used a vendor called "meeting a guy who happens to live 2km from my house who travels to Thailand for gemstones" lol, he doesn't even have a website.

If you check my post history on Pricescope, you can find that I buy both lab + natural diamonds directly from India from a random guy who sent me unsolicited d(iamonds) pics. I thought he was a scammer at first but after he sent me some samples, I know that he's selling honestly. He always offers me 2-day delay on payment, so that I can go to a store and verify that what he sends is real.

Buying from questionable sources has its benefits :lol-2:

My goodness, those prices are insane. Love that the $400,000 odd ring is in “9 carts”. Imagine being the bf snooping for engagement ring ideas on gf insta etc. The shock of finding that “being in the cart ready for checkout” as gf engagement ring choice!
Still waiting for pancake ruby to come back from the jewellers after the setting fiasco. Fingers crossed. IMG_0080.jpeg

Laughing so hard at snooping bfs and pancake rubies

Oh my god I saw such a bright red ruby today (heated, but like USSR flag red) that I feel jealous when I look at my rubies T_T Comparison is the thief of joy indeed. It was so red that I forgot to asked for name / contact info of the seller, now I only have a video of that ruby as if it's Cinderella's shoe.

On the bright side, at the same market fair I found a wife for my ruby. Husband 0.96ct wife 0.69ct (new one hasn't been lab tested, but seller said unheated).

I'm thinking about marrying off this pair so I can chase my redder mistress :lol-2: Where should I post it? Idk if $3950 is a fair price for both of them, can be lowered

I've finally decided on the color I want. Very bright vivid red. Some people say there's too much orange and it will be called a red-orange sapphire instead of ruby, but I feel it's 95% red 5% orange, and if stores can call purplish/pink corundum "rubies" then this is definitely worthy of being a ruby. What do you think?

I will ask the seller to take it to a lab for a quantitative decision, but I wish to hear opinions from other gem lovers.

Also the seller says it's heated but doesn't mention details. Is there any kind of heat treatment that seriously reduce the value of the ruby that I need to check for?

If you like the color and the price is right, then that's really all that matters. Ask 10 people, and we'll probably give you 10 different answers. For me personally, this stone has too much orange for a proper ruby. Rubies really shouldn't show any orange at all... it's not like a spinel where a touch of it will give you that stop light red. Rubies should be as pure a red as possible, ever so slightly veer pink (acceptable or even preferred by some), or purple (which I dislike immensely). But they should never be orange. Again, this is just my opinion! There are some gems where my preference bucks the trade ideal. =)2

Traditional heat? No. But if residues or dyes are introduced? Yes.

Lucky you

Okay it turns out the dream-color perfect red-orange ruby above is 90% likely Beryllium Diffused ruby, which I've been told is very cheap (yet seller asked for $2000). So I've skipped that. Edit: the seller said "I have no idea what treatment they used. I didn't heat the stone myself". So I just have to assume the worst, because I've never seen this kind of bright red color ruby, even online.

So now I'm looking into spinels because it seems the color I want is really available with that gemstones. Thread here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/opinon-on-3-natural-spinel-and-price.289745/

The seller having no idea of the treatment is the best signal to stay away :)

Also, orange is not a desirable color in ruby, only very slight pink and purple modifiers are. If you like red with an orange boost, spinel is indeed the way to go!

Why not the $4000 Burmese ruby I posted earlier or similar?
